Houston (ap) - Training camp is underway after a disappointing finish to the 2025 season. Surratt and company were destroyed by their divisional rivals, the Mules in the first round of the playoffs. Surratt, showing signs of his age, spent the last quarter of the season nursing a sore hamstring, and that could have had something to do with the drafting of young QB Gene Crawford. GM Steve Beans knows that Surratt's career is winding down, so he's clearly preparing for the future with Crawford and Toviessi competing for the #2 slot this year.

Before I end this, I want to address the criticism I have received for reporting on the Renegades. It is public knowledge I am dating the General Manager, Steve Beans, but in no way did that help me get this job. If anything, I am doing HIM a favor by covering this team considering the job I left at News Night in NYC.
Training camp is underway, and here are some notes so far:
- Ben Denehey said he spent the summer working on techniques he learned from the camp he was sent to a few seasons back, and looks to have shown great improvement. He has also emerged as the leader of the offensive line and hopes to protect whoever is in the backfield this year.
- The positional changes of Will Rivers appears to be getting to him as the years progress. Spending most of his college years as a strong side linebacker, he was moved to the middle in 2021 where he spent four seasons before being demoted to weak side linebacker. This camp he looked slow, sluggish and very confused on the field. It is unknown what coach Flannery has planned for him, but he could find himself on the bench more often than not.
- Those who were penciling in Crawford over Toviessi as the #2 QB and eventual replacement to Surratt got a reality check this summer. Despite the potential loss in depth chart ranking, Toviessi spent the better half of training camp mentoring Crawford with disappointing results. Toviessi himself was mentored by Surratt, and has steadily been showing signs of improvement throughout the seasons, but Crawford simply looked lost. It's likely he'll be the 3rd string QB this season.
- Gerald Johnstone continued his downward spiral as he showed up to camp clearly overweight and out of shape. He was never the back GM Beans envisioned when he pulled the trade for him with Chicago, and may be lucky to have a roster spot by the end of the pre-season considering his very high cap hit.
