Houston, We Have A Problem.
Up 20-6 at the end of the first half, the Cardinals seemed to be in a great position to win their 2nd game of the year. And then it didn't. In a play eerily reminiscent of last weeks end of the game fumble that led to a Boston score, CB Charles Yon, after Houston had been stopped 3 and out on the opening possesion of the 3rd quarter, fumbled a punt return.
This one was recovered and takin into the endzone by Houston FB Cesar Bosworth to make it 20-13.
The Cardinals did their best to stop the momentum by marching on the ensuing for a FG to make it 23-13 and then picking off a Jerry Stclair pass and setting themselves up at the Houston 37.....and then it happened again. On the very next play, Mark McMurray tried to hit Phillip Brauer with a tiny slant pass, it was picked off by Houston ILB Christian Lebrunand returned 68 yards for a score, and suddenly the lead was trimmed to 23-20. Houston would finaly put together a solid offensive drive on their next possesion. With the crowd and momentum behind them they drove 63 yards and capped it off with a St. Clair pass completed to Kurt Bice for 26 yards and a touchdown to take a 27-23 lead early in the 4th quarter.
The Cardinals would drive late in the game, and Boyce Heddens 4th FG of the game would draw them to within 1 with 3:30 left in the game, but Houston would pound out the clock, never letting the St. Louis offense return to the field.
Hedden For A Breakdown
Their were alot of culprits willing to take the blame for this hard to swallow road loss, first among them was Kicker Boyce Hedden. "It's a kick I make every day in practice, it isn't hard, I just shanked it, something I should never, I made 4 out of 5 kicks today but the one I missed cost us the game, it isn't easy", he said in the locker room following the game, referring to his missed 37 yard FG attempt in the first quarter that sailed wide to the left.
Players Of The Week
RB's Winston and McKlevey again provided a dynamic 1-2 punch out of the backfield, combining for 109 yards on 29 carries. FB Zach Coward had 5 carries for an additional 32 yards and scored the teams only rushing TD.
FB Douglas Desantis paced the team with 5 catches for 39 yards and a TD catch.
Anibal Stafford, Raymon Guffey and Albert Covington combined for 3 more sacks while Richard White had an interception.
Stafford paced the team with a paltry 6 tackles.
