Stallions Inside Report
with Jimmy Somelove
This week, it's James "Sweet" Tart's Stallions vs. Alan "Smacka" Ho's Killer Whales. Vancouver has been trying to find a balanced attack but have been known to pound it heavy when they think they have an advantage on the ground.
Series is tied 1-1 with Vancouver spanking Salt Lake BADLY (43-17) in their house early last year. The Stallions avenged themselves in a head-banging 10-9 victory in the Stable on their way to their first IFL postseason appearance.
I look for both teams to try and establish a physical presence here as neither QB has fared well against either secondary. The ground game as been a different story.
Tart has bested Ho in these contests rushing for 123 and 111 yards respectively. Ho's best against the SLC defense was a 77 yard effort in their blowout win in Vancouver. He managed only 55 in the 10-9 loss in SLC.
Both teams are looking to take the division lead and both are strong on their home fields which gives the advantage to Vancouver. Both teams have found a system that works for them in the past week but I expect an emphasis on running the football this week to protect the young guns under center.
SLC leads the league with 19 sacks and every week BJ Burke has found a way to get his edge rushers to the QB. Stallions have been known to come with different fronts easily switching from their base 3-4 to a 4-3, 4-6, and a Nickel 3-5-3 (used last week to harass and confuse the Columbia pashing attack). The SLC LBs are the best in the IFL and have shown versatility playing as defensive backs, down-lineman, or linebackers. Earlier the season this unit gave up the big play too often and Vancouver likes to go downfield.
Vancouver brings the heat with a solid but unspectacular front seven. They have only 10 sacks on the year but they can turn it on at any time with Lance Delano in the line-up ( 3 sacks last week). Their strength is a ball hawking secondary and a power running game (135/game). Alan Ho is averaging 5.48 YPC and going up against a defense that doesn't have the tackles to challenge him.
Stallions give up over 126 yards a game so Ho should be able to get 100 yards rushing in this contest . This should let Dennis Colella get the ball deep and improve his 52.1 passer rating.
This should be a good game but look for a blowout either way IF one of them starts turning over the football. Both teams have enough weapons to make the other one pay dearly for fumbles and INTs.
