Stallions Extinguish Fire
Jimmy Somelove, Salt Lake Times
Nigel Booker was efficient and precise as he picked apart the Fire for 270 yds and a touch in a 23-7 win.
The Stallions returned to running the football this Sunday and that philosophy yielded 36 carries for 155 yards and an offensive output of over 400 yards. It also opened up the passing game down field as Booker went 5/6 for 160 yards on deep balls.
The defense returned this week too! After giving up a first quarter TD, Morgan Hare rallied the defense and they went on to harrass Columbia signal-caller Jaime Morris all day. 36 times the Fire went to the air and all they could come up with was 217 passing yards, 0 TDS, 2 INTs, 1 fumble, 4 sacks, and 5 pressures---Weidner logged a sack and 3 of those pressures; giving him 6.5 sacks this season and 19 sacks for this defense.
Columbia struggled to establish anything and James Tart kept them from getting into a groove by puting together another 100 yard game (13th of his career) which allowed the Stallions to control the football for over 33 minutes.
Key injuries to RT Swink, NT Bryant, and WR Mertz allowed for their backups to step up with the best performance being turned it by Donnie Tyler, who was picked up off waivers only weeks ago.
Tyler, formerly with the Voodoo, stepped right into the SE position and proved he's no cast off turning in 6 catches for 91 yards and Booker's only TD. We really like the way rookie FB/HB/TE Norman Wiseman used his 9 carries to soften the Fire's front-seven and kept Tart fresh for his big runs in the 4th quarter. This gives the Stallions a legitimate 'change of pace back' and that makes Tart more explosive late in games
Glad the Stallions have found their identity. Now let's see what they do against the villified Killer Whales as the team travels to Vancouver this week to play for the lead in the division--JS
