  • Matadors 2024 Offseason: Mired in Mediocrity

The Rookie Draft Class of 2024

2.13. OG Walt Cooper, Western Illinois University Leathernecks
    6-3, 283 lbs.
    Very low volatility
    Didn't Interview:

We really need tackles, but the rookie class of tackles is pretty much picked clean. So, we go guard. The guy's static bar is pretty set at fifty, and his bench strength is at 31 which is still strong and above average. I took him because his endurance bar/Broadjump combine numbers indicate an ironman at the position. I could care less about his height. He's the better rounded offensive guard left in the draft.

I have to rebuild the offensive line and get some strength back in that position group. We've been dealing with finesse blockers the past few seasons, and it's not been pretty.

Cooper will be moved to right guard and play opposite 4th year left guard Moe Hoover (51/51).

It's not an exciting or awe inspiring pair of guards, but they're both well rounded with decent (50 plus) blocking strength and endurance.

3.16. OT Sherman Wells, Baylor Bears
    6-4, 308 lbs
    Didn't Interview
    High volatility

Good strength, average to slightly below average run blocking skills, and decent pass blocking skills. He's better than what we have now.

Both interviews came in AFTER the draft and our scouts, average at offensive line, say very overrated.

Oh well. I'm going to err on the side of the combines and the Draft Utility

I feel your pain. If I have the choice between drafting a guy I believe will make my roster vs a guy that might make my roster I usually get the first guy

4-15. TE Adam Capps, Iowa State
          6-3, 240 lbs
          Low volatility

Has zero endurance bar and plays like the Cowardly Lion, sounds like a Matador to me.

Combines indicate good speed, good Solevision, and good Position Drill. Slightly below average Bench and Agility, average Broadjump.

He's a tad short, tad underweight, but his static bar in Big Play Receiving are right at fifty, static bar in strength is below average. He looks like a receiving tight end that can pass block, but is a chicken shit.

5.14. FG Kicker Bob Blackwell, Washington Huskies
            5-10, 188 lbs.
            Did Not Interview
            Low volatility

Freddie Charlton, a fifteen year veteran kicker who's played for Madison and now the Matadors, is a great kickoff specialist, but his field goal strength is almost negligible.

Enter Washington Huskies field goal kicker Bob Blackwell.

Blackwell's bars hold up pretty well in the draft utility, and I think the kid can be a good field goal kicker. We'll two platoon the kicking duties with Charlton holding down the kickoffs, and Blackwell assigned the field goal and extra point duties.

I'm gonna go puke in a corner. Worst draft class ever for me ..in any league. We need booms, a lot of them.
