Demons "Leg" Out A Win
Behind 5 FG's from K Marcus Collier and a nasty defensive effort the Demons beat divisional rival Dakota 22-0 before 62,500 fans at the newly renovated
Kraft Field. With plenty of former Demons in attendance for the retirement of former QB Will Irby's #11 the home team did not disappoint. The Demons racked
up plenty of yards (432) on a undermatched Dakota squad who somehow kept this game closer then the score indicates.
With newly acquired RB Roman Peckham and RB JC Devine carving through the Spirit defense with a total of 171 rushing yards between them the Demons were pretty
much in control most of the way. The Demons rushed the ball for a total of 227 yards. Peckham had nothing but praise for his new OL and teammates. "What can I
say? The guys up front did all the work. I just looked for the holes and hit them as hard as I could." said a smiling Peckham. Devine had what looked a sure
TD run on the 3rd play of the game as he scampered for 40 yards but was caught from behind by Dakota rookie LB Dexter Hargrove. "That big dude can run, I
thought for sure I was getting 6 right there. A great play by him to save the TD", said Devine. It was a great play indeed by Hargrove as QB Dennis Grier
eventually threw a INT at the Dakota 3 yard line.
Besides the INT at the goal line by Grier the veteran QB was solid. Grier completed 18 of his 28 passes for 1 TD and 1 INT. "Hats off to the Spirit, them
guys never quit and played some tough football today." said, Greer. "We really wanted the win today with this being Will Irby day and his number being retired."
With a stingy Spirit defense and TD's hard to come by today the Demons relied on K Marcus Collier to put this one away. The kicker had his best game to date with
5 FG's (22,41,46,37,42). "There was no wind today so there was no excuse for not making those kicks, I just did my job" said, Collier.
The Demon's defense was dominant only allowing the Spirit 140 total yards. SS Tommy Alexander led the way with 8 tackles. "They were starting a rookie QB so the
first thing coach said this week was we were gonna stop the run and make this rook beat us" said, Alexander. "That is what we did, Dave. They only had 37 yards
running on us, we stepped up!"
The Demons will travel to Fresno next week and will see a tougher test in hostile territory. "This will be a big test for us, no doubt." said, LB Louis McCarthy.
"They have a good QB and he has some weapons. We will enjoy this victory today and start getting ready for Fresno tomorrow." said McCarthy.
Demon Notes
Former QB Will Irby had his #11 retired in a pre game ceremony. Plenty of former Demons were on hand for the occasion. Irby thanked the fans for a great 17 years
in Madison. "I wouldn't change a thing on how my career went playing here. We had some good years and were always a competitive team. You the fans supported us every
week. The Demon Nation is special and this is why I still call Madison home." said, a emotional Irby.
