5 things the Stallions must do to beat the Oakland Assassins
by Jimmie Somelove
The Stallions kick off the season with a chance to redeem themselves from a season sweep last year while the Assassins look to be reeling from some tough FA breaks. Here’s what they’ve got to do to get a win tonight:
1. Pressure the QB. The starter has not yet been named but he must go down and go down often. The ‘new look’ pass rush must set a tone early and be relentless.
2. Block veteran Nickey Doyle and Dean Walsh. This winter-spring tandem has to be neutralized for the Stallions offense to take flight. Look for SLC to keep its backs and TEs at home this week to help out blocking on the edges.
3. Run The Ball. The Stallions drafted pounders to compliment the multidimensional Glenn Dixon and I expect them to showcase the pound as they look to keep the Assassins’ pass rush at bay.
4. Throw downfield. QB Don Downing is not a big arm but he can hit his weapons in stride—get him in rhythm and he makes the big throw when it counts.
5. Defend this house. Every year we hear about how the Stallions will be improved on defense and, every year, we get the same defensive ineptitude. Make it real tonight!
