Dateline Tulsa
Those were the words heard in the lockerroom this week in Tulsa. The words were spoken by Tulsa and IFL Greats, Ken "Brick" Albriktsen and Ken "DH" Singleton. Both players are recovering from serious injuries sustained earlier this season. Brick was knocked out in week 6 by a severs hamstring pull. He is listed as "Doubtful". DH was knocked out in week 14 with a hyperextended knee. He is listed as "Questionable". It was the first time in DHs illustrious 11 year career that he missed a game.
Tulsa has struggled mightily this season. They are suffering through their worst season since 2012. Currently the teams record is 7-8. The team is still in the hunt for their 9 consecutive division title, but ned a win and a upset by 1-14 Texas, to win the division. A tall order.
Brick and DH walked in to Coach CJ Gunns office on Wednesday and told the coach they wanted to play. Coach Gunn was happy to comply. He announced his decision at his presser on Saturday. "DH and Brick are cornerstones of this franchise. Tulsa would not be near as successful without them. This may be both players last season. I know they have hinted at retirement after their respective injuries. And them wanting to play, shows me and their teammates, the fans and the IFL what true champions are made of. I will start both players. Im hoping they can play the entire game. But I will leave the playing time decision up to them."
The interwebs were ablaze after the presser. Tulsa fans were excited by the news. THawk Billy Wrote on the official Tigerhwak message board that "This news is almost as exciting as when we wont the championship!"
The IFL Network talking heads were not so excited. Spark Wonup, beat writer for the Lawrence Phantoms had this to say "I dont know, man. Is a 50% or 75% Singleton or Albriksten better then a 100% Scarborough or Meske? Is Tulsa trying to win or are they letting their faded stars dictate who plays, when?"
Fresno GM Kobeck was quoted "Typical Tulsa. Let the stat whores tack on more stats. All they do is try and get more yards or TDs for their stars. I bet they throw 20 long bombs to Brick and try and let DH score a couple meaningless TDs late in the game. What a joke."
Regardless of any negative press, Tulsa is going to let their stars go out how they want too.
