  • Lansing Draft Review

This is year 3 of the overhaul in Lansing. In the first year, we drafted CB Jimmy Hamilton with 1.3, who is one of the top corners in the league (87/87). In 2019, the Ogres drafted their franchise QB, Bryant Bruce at 1.1. Later in the same round, DT Bob Morris was selected at 1.30 to become one of the rocks in the interior of the 4-3 system. This year, Lansing has continued the rebuilding process...

1.21 WR Desmond Burks - Probably the single biggest need on the roster was a playmaking WR. Burks has the size and intangibles to become a good overall WR. He should eventually be a very good #2 target for Bruce.
    Pre TC - 31/50
    Post TC -

1.31 LT Darnell Taylor - In the eyes of the GM, LG needed an upgrade. Lorenzo Griffin will move inside to LG, and Taylor will anchor the left side of the line for the next decade. Both positions are instantly upgraded.
    Pre TC - 35/72
    Post TC -

2.20 RB Keith Murray - With Derrick Ward heading into his 6th season, Murray should provide him with a breather from time to time.
    Pre TC - 36/53
    Post TC -

2.31 FS Chester Emley - Lansings secondary just got another boost. He might not be filled out in every area, but he has the bars where they are needed for a free safety. We are hoping he holds post TC.
    Pre TC - 35/60
    Post TC -

3.19 K Adrian Logan - Considering we have a kicker that is accurate, people are wondering why draft a kicker? Well, he is accurate at 30 yards or less, and isn't getting anu younger. Not going to fly in this league. Instant upgrade with the best kicker in the draft.
    Pre TC - 45/85
    Post TC -

4.2 CB Mitchell Donaldson - He should become a solid nickel back for the Ogres.
    Pre TC - 32/46
    Post TC -

5.17 ILB Norman Levine - Great run stopper in a position of need. Doesn't hurt that his special teams bar is maxed out as well.
    Pre TC - 17/52
    Post TC -

6.22 FB Bernie Wynn - Wynn should be an upgrade over Dedrickson.
    Pre TC - 27/57
    Post TC -

6.30 TE Byron Dunn - Should turn out to be a decent backup TE if he holds.
    Pre TC - 18/55
    Post TC -

7.21 WR Mercury Bridges - Took a flyer on a WR with some potential as a 3rd or 4th receiver.
    Pre TC - 21/38
    Post TC -

Overall, Lansings roster has 28 players that are in their 3rd year or less. Twelve of the 28 are starters, and the rest should be good backups for years to come. We are very pleased with the progress made since taking over in 2019. With the division up for grabs again this year, Lansing would like to win its second division title in a row.

Can't argue the logic behind this draft. Good selections at good times. Nice foundation being set in Lansing!

I thought 2.31 FS Chester Emley was excellent value at that spot (I was hoping he would fall to 3.3

I also considered K Adrian Logan at 3.3 and 3.15 despite no massive need at K as he is going to be awesome..

      Good job

        Thanks guys.

I had 2 GM's offer me multiple picks that started with future a 2nd and more for Emley, so I am hoping he ends up to be great value. Taylor, the LT was my 3rd choice as LT, so I am hoping he holds. If he does, 2 offensive line positions are upgraded. I took the kicker in the 3rd because I think he will be a top notch kicker for many years.

Next year we will be focusing on WR, LB, RB, and TE upgrades.

Not too much of a shock other than my 7th round WR just surpassed him.

Just about what I truly expected. He will eventually settle in around 62/62 and be a very good LT.

2.20 RB Keith Murray - With Derrick Ward heading into his 6th season, Murray should provide him with a breather from time to time.
          Pre TC - 36/53
          Post TC - 38/49 (+2/-4)
He should still settle in as a decent backup to Ward.

2.31 FS Chester Emley - Lansings secondary just got another boost. He might not be filled out in every area, but he has the bars where they are needed for a free safety. We are hoping he holds post TC.

As long as he doesn't drop too much further, he should remain a staple in the Ogre secondary.

3.19 K Adrian Logan - Considering we have a kicker that is accurate, people are wondering why draft a kicker? Well, he is accurate at 30 yards or less, and isn't getting anu younger. Not going to fly in this league. Instant upgrade with the best kicker in the draft.

Held as suspected. I am hoping the future accuracy bar fills out, then he will be the kicker for a long ime in Lansing.

4.2 CB Mitchell Donaldson - He should become a solid nickel back for the Ogres.
          Pre TC - 32/46
          Post TC - 33/43 (+1/-3)
Still feel he will be a decent nickel back.

5.17 ILB Norman Levine - Great run stopper in a position of need. Doesn't hurt that his special teams bar is maxed out as well.
          Pre TC - 17/52

He dropped alot further than expected. He will make the team on special teams alone.

6.22 FB Bernie Wynn - Wynn should be an upgrade over Dedrickson.
          Pre TC - 27/57
          Post TC - 29/53 (+2/-4)
Still will be an upgrade at FB. If he continues to slide, no harm done with a 6th rounder.

6.30 TE Byron Dunn - Should turn out to be a decent backup TE if he holds.
          Pre TC - 18/55
          Post TC - 21/49 (+3/-6)
          See Wynn.

7.21 WR Mercury Bridges - Took a flyer on a WR with some potential as a 3rd or 4th receiver.
          Pre TC - 21/38
          Post TC - 34/50 (+13/+12)
This was a complete shocker to me. If this guy continues growth like this, he may very well be the top steal of the draft.

Other than 7th rounder Bridges extreme boom and Logan holding, not a spectacular camp. I will hold off judgement on this class until after the 2023 season.

Other news....LCB Jimmy Hamilton went from 88/88 to 92/92, and 2nd year QB Bryant Bruce jumped from 71/87 to 80/87. Very good camp for the past 2 1st round Lansing draft picks.
