Pittsburgh, PA. The Little Rock Toads had an overtime win today to get their first road win of the year, and only the second in franchise history. A fieldgoal by Jesus Stratton won the game in overtime, after Ralph Given led the team on a late 4th quarter drive to tie up the game on a TD pass to WR Richard Hathcock.
The Toads had been struggling on defense against argueably the best O-line in the league. Pittsburgh had David Rodrigez going strong opening up holes with that offensive line, bringing in to question if this Toads front seven is as good as advertised? Rodrigez had 138 yards rushing on only 19 carries and allowed a 56 yard run at one point of the game. If Rodrigez had been given the ball more, the Toads may have been coming home with a loss.
As time ran out in regulation, the Toads defensive line suffered a serious hit. DT Frank Wideman, on a strong pass rush, injured his wrist. X-rays taken after the game showed a torn wrist tendon, and Wideman is expected to miss up to 6 weeks.
Folks are now a bit worried about the impact this could have on the Toads season. Though a win against Oakland this week is a strong possibility, the Toads then face off against perhps the two best RB's in the game. Salt Lake City's James Tart, and Vancouver's Allen Ho are now looking at a Toad d-line with a big hole in it now that Wideman is out. Second year man Ted Woods is now left in the middle to plug up the holes, and starting in place of Wideman will be second year DT Carl Essary. Essary has been promoted by the coaching staff as having decent potential, but he will have to start fulfilling some of that potential real soon.
