Matadors Say Goodbye To Veteran Defensive Tackle
Damon Ellard, All Pro Bowl Defensive Tackle, Traded To Norfolk
Damon Ellard is now anchoring Norfolk's d line, and the draft picks we picked up will help Los Angeles as we launch another, minor rebuild of the team.
Attendance dropped 22 percent with Debussy's injury and dampened hopes of a winning season. So, hard decisions had to be made, and two players, a promising rookie quarterback and a stalwart veteran of the defenisve line were both traded away for draft picks. I'm all for building through the draft, but I'm damn tired of losing.
Left defensive tackle Damon Ellard of theLos Angeles Matadors has been recognized on the Imperial League's 2020 All Imperial League's First Team. Ellard, drafted with the third pick in the first round of the 2016 draft, had been previously honored in 2018 when he was awarded the All Imperial League 2nd Team Defensive Tackle honor.
Ellard currently ranks third all time Los Angeles' in Blocked Pass, 4th all time L.A. in Sacks, and in Hurries. He's been P.O.G. once, and has 11 mentions for P.O.W.
Last season Ellard recorded 58 tackles, 16 assists, 10.5 sacks, 6 blocked passes, 16 hurries, and twenty knockdowns while starting all 16 games.
Running back Tom Mallard has made the All Imperial League's 2nd Team as a Runnng Back, adding to a lengthy resume in his short four seasons with the Matadors. He was honored in 2019 with All Imperial League First Team, and was the 2018 Imperial League Offensive Rookie of the Year. He ranks 1st alltime Los Angeles in Yards Per Carry, 2nd in LAS Rushing TDS; LAS Rushing Yards; and LAS Rushing Attempts.
Last season he ran for 1739 yards, averaging 4.61 yards percarry, and had nine touchdowns. The nine rushing touchdowns last season is the most in his career. He also caught 46 passes for 409 yards and caught one touchdown pass.
Right Tackle Kyle Ford has also made the All Imperial League's 2nd Team at right tackle. It's the first league honor for the 5th year pro. He was drafted with the fifth pick in the first round of the 2017 draft and he played collegieately at Appalachain State.
Ford is an ironman, starting and playing in three consecutive seasons without a missed game, and in his four seasons he's played in 64 games, starting 50.
Last season he had 11 pancake blocks, allowed only 4 sacks, and garnered a 31.0 Block Percentage. He currently ranks 7th All Time Los Angeles in Pancake Blocks, and 10th All Time Matadors in Run Opportunities.
