The Phantoms won big and lost bigger today as superstar Edmund Peacock, the first player to ever don a Phantoms uniform and the heart and soul of our defense, was lost for the season in a game against the Iowa City Snipe Hunters. Edmund's injury was a horrific end to an otherwise storybook day for the Phantoms.
Lawrence methodically opened up a 27-3 lead by half-time and chewed up clock the whole second half en route to easily their best game of the IFL's young existance. Eddie Gonzalez piled up 149 yards rushing and now leads the league with 232 while Tobias Stanfield connected on 16 of 20 pass attempts and led the offense on 2 touchdown drives while not throwing a single interception. The defense also displayed a great performance holding IWC to 214 total yards and returning a fumble 23 yards for a touchdown. It was the kind of complete game this reporter just loves to see...but then it happened...
As Daniel Lenhardt hauled in his first interception of the season late in the 4th quarter, Peacock was already on the ground in pain compliments of a pulled hamstring.
"It was the worst interception of my career" Lenhardt would later say.
When informed of Lenhardt's comment a joking Peacock seemed to disagree: "He better like that interception! I worked my ass off for that interception. I was putting the pressure on when Kroll chucked that thing. They give half-sacks so why not interceptions? I should get a half an interception for that play!"
Unfortunately he won't be getting that half-interception or any other stat this season as the initial prognosis is that he'll be hurting for at least 19 weeks, which takes us right up to the IFL Championship Game.
It will now take a hell of an effort from the rest of the Phantom "D" if they're to have any hopes of playing in that game.
