    Phantoms 2020 Draft

    1.20 Corwin Hawthorne, SE:
The loss of Marty Silvan hurt us hard at one of the prime positions in this league. We had to react immediately and thus selected Corwin with our first pick. Our scout, Leland Howe, thinks Corwin's best days are ahead of him and that he'll be a much better pro than collegiate athlete. The plan is for him to help us immediately so he better have a great camp! He'll also hopefully help us on kick returns and on the kickoff team. Corwin was actually #2 on our draft list but need forced our hand. #1 on our list was still there for our next selection...
    Height: 5'11" Weight: 181 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 21/38
    Post-Camp Rating: 25/43 (+4/+5)

1.27 Peter Merchant, RG: Rarely do we get into trying to mock-draft and project who will take what position but this was an exception. Oakland had two picks in front of us and didn't seem likely to take a Guard. Turns out Vancouver was going to take Hawthorne 2 slots after us and Merchant lasted until 1.27 so this couldn't have worked out better for us. Peter is a 6'6" 331 lb Man-Child who plays to win and should help open up holes for Louie Humphries. We expect him to be the Phantoms' starting RG for the majority of the 2020's.
    Height: 6'6" Weight: 331 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 21/58
    Post-Camp Rating: 28/59 (+7/+1)

2.19 Bob Midget, LDT: Bob was the 11th ranked player in the draft based on a panel of IFL currently employed scouts. We figured that one of the many highly-graded DTs would have to fall and Midget was the last of the top tier of DTs in this draft. We couldn't pass up the value at 2.19. He fills a need for us as a back-up to start but could be a starter down the road.
    Height: 6'3" Weight: 317 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 37/54
    Post-Camp Rating: 42/52 (+5/-2)

2.27 Kelly Whitfield, FL: Though Hawthorne was our #1 target, we felt that Whitfield would be off the board before him. To see Kelly available more than a round later was very surprising and we had to take a shot at another receiving threat for Roderick Amos. Whitfield is well balanced but one skill shines above all and that's his ability to adjust to the ball which makes up for his 5'9" frame. Our scouts think he's underrated and will be an excellent slot receiver.
    Height: 5'9" Weight: 189 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 23/47
    Post-Camp Rating: 27/47 (+4/0)

3.12 Warren Donald Donaldson: We were all set to pull the trigger and select Illinois kicker Joey Stargell when the dastardly Houston Renegades swooped in trade-wise and selected him 1 slot in front of us. We turned to Virginia kicker/character Warren Donald Donaldson who claims to be not only the best kicker in the draft but as he puts it "...in all the land." He had this to say about the Renegades trading in front: "Fuck the Houston Renegades!" (sips from an obvious liquor bottle with the label torn off) "Fuck 'em!"
    Height: 5'10" Weight: 182 lb.

    Pre-Camp Rating: 30/67
    Post-Camp Rating: 30/57 (0/-10)

4.19 Jason Eatherton, FL: Having already selected 2 WRs in this draft we really wanted to go in another direction but Eatherton was still on the board in the mid-4th round and has potentially great return ability at both PR and KR spots. A possession receiver at best it'll be a bonus if he can play WR. We might have 7-8 WRs on the roster this season!
    Height: 6'0" Weight: 196 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 24/44
    Post-Camp Rating: 27/40 (+3/-4)

4.27 Bob Walls, LCB: Bob has decent size and a decent combine. CB was a big need for us and thus we took a gamble on the local New Hampshire product. Even if he doesn't work out, he works out just being a body on the roster at the position.
    Height: 6'0" Weight: 195 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 14/55
    Post-Camp Rating: 18/49 (+4/-6)

5.22 Daryl Rivers, C: We really expected someone to scoop Daryl up before we'd be willing to use a pick on a Center. That didn't happen and we felt Daryl was too good of a talent to pass up in the late 5th round. Myron Green has probably seen his last days as a Phantom with the addition of Rivers.
    Height: 6'0" Weight: 272 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 24/50
    Post-Camp Rating: 28/50 (+4/0)

7.20 Wes Van Hoose, T Simple need based pick to fill a roster spot.
    Height: 6'4" Weight: 309 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 8/41
    Post-Camp Rating: 12/40 (+4/-1)

7.21 Arnold Dragon, QB: You gotta try to nab a QB every year and Arnold is this years attempt. Good combine for a 7th round pick. The poor man's Antonio Tyler.
    Height: 6'1" Weight: 208 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 9/31
    Post-Camp Rating: 13/33 (+4/+2)

7.27 Larry Huffman, SS: His size is right, which is rare in this draft class. It was late in the draft and maybe we should have gone elsewhere. We'll see.
    Height: 6'1" Weight: 219 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 10/32
    Post-Camp Rating: 11/28 (+1/-4)

    Post Camp Report

    1.20 Corwin Hawthorne, SE:
Corwin had a good camp but we were hoping for great, as high as those expectations are for a rookie. Hawthorne had the pole position for the starting SE position but it's now chaotic. Continued improvement should see him crack the starting line-up at some point. Doesn't seem to be the best use of 1.20 at this point despite the WR corp in this draft looking bad I had to take the chance based on slim being better than none.
    Height: 5'11" Weight: 181 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 21/38
    Post-Camp Rating: 25/43 (+4/+5)

1.27 Peter Merchant, RG: Peter did his best and showed marked improvement during camp but he's just not yet ready to start at this level. He looks to be great down the line but for now he's a great project similar to Byron Lewandowski last season, though Byron started. Merchant gives us a great chance at a powerful years 2022-24 OLine!
    Height: 6'6" Weight: 331 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 21/58
    Post-Camp Rating: 28/59 (+7/+1)

2.19 Bob Midget, LDT: Bob doesn't project to be quite as good as we thought/hoped but he's ready to contribute now. He's already helped the team by lighting a fire under CJ Reeves' ass and the veteran DT came back stronger in his 11th season! Midget looks to become a powerful run-stopper very soon. In our rotation he'll get plenty of playing time as a rookie.
    Height: 6'3" Weight: 317 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 37/54
    Post-Camp Rating: 42/52 (+5/-2)

2.27 Kelly Whitfield, FL: Kelly still looks to have the same potential as our scouts thought and had a good camp, improving in some areas and learning the system. Whether or not he sees any/much time as a rookie will continue to depend on him. He should be ready in 2021 though.
    Height: 5'9" Weight: 189 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 23/47
    Post-Camp Rating: 27/47 (+4/0)

3.12 Warren Donald Donaldson: What a character! What a clown? Warren was ultra-confident coming into the league and hasn't shown the dedication necessary at this level. He doesn't look to be anywhere near what we'd hoped coming out of camp.
    Height: 5'10" Weight: 182 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 30/67
    Post-Camp Rating: 30/57 (0/-10)

4.19 Jason Eatherton, FL: Eatherton came out of camp with decent return skills but is most likely going to be a career back-up/seldom starter at both positions as well as WR.
    Height: 6'0" Weight: 196 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 24/44
    Post-Camp Rating: 27/40 (+3/-4)

4.27 Bob Walls, LCB: Bob's hype was bigger than his play it seems but that doesn't mean he can't play, and maybe even start one day, in this league. He'll learn behind our other CBs for a while and we'll see where his Phantom career goes.
    Height: 6'0" Weight: 195 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 14/55
    Post-Camp Rating: 18/49 (+4/-6)

5.22 Daryl Rivers, C: Darryl seems to be what we expected and had a solid camp. Our Center position could be filled for a long while if he maxes.
    Height: 6'0" Weight: 272 lb.
    Pre-Camp Rating: 24/50
    Post-Camp Rating: 28/50 (+4/0)

7.20 Wes Van Hoose, T Wes did his best to improve, so he might make the roster if no one new comes in. He's still far from an actual player in this league.

He's looking just like Louie "Propane" Humphries did on first glance. No worries at this point.

Bump. Got most of the draftees described and linked to their draft utility page.

I really liked Hawthorne and Merchant. I was drafting too early for Hawthorne. Nobody seemed to have the equity to move up in the draft so I could take him and we're not good enough to make even slightly bad trades to get one player. I really hoped Merchant would slide through the first. I was asleep or at work or something or I may have done something with my 3 2's to get him.

Whitfield is the other player I looked at. I took my WR Stills one pick earlier. I'm working from memory here but I think it was either a VU vs Und interview or the difference in big play receiving; maybe both. I wouldn't trade Stills for Whitfield but I wouldn't mind both.

                  Start of 2021 Update.

Not the most interesting of reads. Not a lot of player movement except for busts.

                  1.20 Corwin Hawthorne, SE:
Not what I signed on for. I expected more and a totally different style of player. Hopefully he's not done creeping despite a stagnant 2021 camp.
                  Height: 5'11" Weight: 181 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 21/38
                  Post-Camp Rating: 25/43 (+4/+5)
                  2021 Start Rating: 43/48 (+22/+10)

1.27 Peter Merchant, RG: Peter earned the starting job as a rookie after all in 2020 and appears ready to take the next step in 2021. His run blocking is slowly going down as his pass blocking improves though which is not typically what we want from our RG.
                  Height: 6'6" Weight: 331 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 21/58
                  Post-Camp Rating: 28/59 (+7/+1)
                  2021 Start Rating: 45/59 (+24/+1)

2.19 Bob Midget, LDT: Quality run-stopper and overall DT. Endurance makes him more suited to a DT rotation than a starting job which is fine because for now he's still coming in to spell Johnnie Learned and C.J. Reeves.
                  Height: 6'3" Weight: 317 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 37/54
                  Post-Camp Rating: 42/52 (+5/-2)
                  2021 Start Rating: 48/50 (+11/-4)

2.27 Kelly Whitfield, FL: Kelly continues to improve daily and is poised to take over for legendary "Shake" Greene when the time comes.
                  Height: 5'9" Weight: 189 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 23/47
                  Post-Camp Rating: 27/47 (+4/0)
                  2021 Start Rating: 46/48 (+23/+1)

3.12 Warren Donald Donaldson: Warren didn't have nearly what it took to make it on our team.
                  Height: 5'10" Weight: 182 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 30/67
                  Post-Camp Rating: 30/57 (0/-10)
                  2021 Start Rating: Gone!

4.19 Jason Eatherton, FL: Not sure what we've got here. It's on Jason to show something in 2021 or he might be headed elsewhere. All he has to offer at the moment is above-average KR skills (65).
                  Height: 6'0" Weight: 196 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 24/44
                  Post-Camp Rating: 27/40 (+3/-4)
                  2021 Start Rating: 33/37 (+9/-7)

4.27 Bob Walls, LCB: I love 6' CBs and Bob surprised many with a quality 2021 Training Camp. He'll see increased playing time this season.
                  Height: 6'0" Weight: 195 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 14/55
                  Post-Camp Rating: 18/49 (+4/-6)
                  2021 Start Rating: 28/45 (+14/-10)

5.22 Daryl Rivers, C: Rivers is progressing nicely behind All-League Jeff Swasey while providing a solid hand at long snapping. We traded up for this pick and seem to be justified at the moment.
                  Height: 6'0" Weight: 272 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 24/50

                  2021 Start Rating: 34/49 (+10/-1)

7.20 Wes Van Hoose, T: On the roster due to circumstance only. Wes is going the usual way of the 7th round pick... fizzling.
                  Height: 6'4" Weight: 309 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 8/41

                  2021 Start Rating: 16/39 (+8/-2)

                  7.21 Arnold Dragon, QB: ...
                  Height: 6'1" Weight: 208 lb.
                  Pre-Camp Rating: 9/31
                  Post-Camp Rating: 13/33 (+4/+2)
