  • Lansing thoughts...

When taking over the Lansing franchise last offseason, it occurred to me that there is some good young talent on the roster, but they were not quite ready to compete for even a division title.

After starting the past season slowly, a decision was made to trade their top asset, WR Bernard Strong. This had people around the league scratching their heads. The decision was made because Strong was a 5th year player, and his value was extremely high. We figured if we were not going to be legitimate contenders, we might as well stock up on draft picks and hope the future is brighter.

Although we did not receive 3 first round picks for him, we were able to acquire 2 firsts, 2 2nds, a 3rd and a 5th. We are hoping for a good deep draft class this year to take advantage of the extra picks. Hope is there that a franchise QB will be sitting atop of the draft board. For now, we will be focusing on several key pieces to the defense and roster depth during free agency.

Though the Strong trade surprised me, I didn't have much knowledge of your roster at the time. I like the thinking here and believe too many teams do the opposite.

      Thanks Jester.

I am fairly new to FOF overall, and have tried building teams the other way. Putting patches on a bunch of different areas that may be lacking. When you have an asset like that, and you are still a season or 2 away from competing, you have to make the best decision for the future.

Hopefully, I will be able to stock the team with more young talent, and watch them grow together.

i've always built through the draft, and it's fun when a plan comes together. you'll have your hits, misses, and oh wells, but it's what makes it fun...

        good luck:thewave:

That was an unusual decision but I see your line of thinking. It was the same reason I traded the leagues best quarterback in the prime of his career. I knew my team was far to weak to even make a run at the playoffs, so by trading him, I could get younger in a few positions and make a serious run 3-4 years down the road.
