Tulsa acquired free safety Bart Maestas from Montreal in a stunning trade deadline deal. Tulsa parted with 5 picks, including a future 1st and 2nd year safety Fred Franco. That package brought 5 year pro Maestas to Tulsa.
Tulsa GM Tarcone called a press conference to announce the acquisition. At the presser he told the gathered press "We are excited to bring in a player of Barts quality to Tulsa. He will help out defense tremendously. With (safety) Earnest Porter out with a separated shoulder, I feel we will continue with our excellent defensive play."
Asked what will happen when Porter returns, Tarcone responded "i see maestas playing corner back or being a backup safety and nickelback. One or the other. We have had some big losses at corner in the last couple seasons. Rookie Johnnie Cassady has played well, but he has struggled, as most rookies will. The experience Maestas brings will really shore up the defensive backfield. And Bart is young. He will move to the other safety slot when Walter Fitzgerald retires. We have insured some continuity at the safety position."
The next question was a about all the picks being sent to Montreal, Tarcone said "We have a history of trading picks. You know that. I dont care that much about picks, when I can get a player that will help for many seasons. And this player will be in yellow and black for the next 8 seasons. And he is developed. He wont be a bust. Plus, Im hoping Montreal will have the 32nd pick the next couple seasons, of each round."
Tarcone again shows the league why they are a perennial contender. Another bold move to improve the defense. Another bold move to take the Tigerhawks to the Imperial Bowl.
