Our Beloved Phantoms are enjoying an invite to this week's NC Championship Game in Pennsylvania hosted by the mighty Lions and there's an air of confidence blowing through the streets of Lawrence that hasn't been felt in a few seasons. We sit today with Owner/GM Jester Blaze and strong safety phenom Dwayne Hernandez to discuss...
**********
SW: You're going up against the Great Gene Hamilton this week...
JB: Exactly as I wanted it.
SW: haha excellent lead-in. The general consensus is that you don't respect Mr. Hamilton and have wanted this match-up all season. ???
JB: Ridiculous. I, and I hope we as a team, simply want to be the best with no asterisks. The only way to do that is to go head-to-head and beat the best. So you see, our urge to be in this exact position is actually the utmost respect for Gene and the Lions.
SW: So do you see something that you think the rest of the league doesn't? A weakness in Hamilton's game?
JB: I don't believe there are any weaknesses to Gene Hamilton's game. I don't even think there are any non-strengths! But I also believe in our defensive strengths, especially little DH, and think there's no reason they can't have a great day.
SW: Little DH... He's up next. What's up with that guy?
JB: He's just a playmaking monster like his uncle. His career is gonna be bright and hopefully he gets his 1st ring in 2018!
We actually did the unthinkable and drastically switched up defensive styles about 5 weeks ago and since then Dwayne has 6 INTs, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. As you know he's ended the past 2 games with an INT. The boy is hot!!
SW: Well I'll take that great attention getter and switch this convo over to the man himself....
************
SW: Dwayne Hernandez, the latest Phantom hero... and nephew to the great Charles Yon... Welcome to our humble interview studio!
DH: Thanks, man! It's great to be here!
SW: Let's get right to what people want to hear: It's gone unpublicized since your draft year but you're actually the nephew of another IFL playmaker, former St. Louis Cardinal Charles Yon. Give the readers an outline of that situation.
DH: Well my mom, Julie (Yon) Hernandez, is Uncle Charles' big sister. She's very demanding and was instrumental in shaping Uncle Charles to be the player he was. Everyone knows what happened to tragically end his career. After that I was the beneficiary of some great instruction and countless hours of advice. There's no better football camp out there!
SW: Were you surprised to lead the league in INTs this season or is that something you envisioned happening?
DH: I certainly didn't expect it but I put a lot of time and effort into training so positive results don't surprise me either. When I came into this league I was a guy with a fast 40 but with the help of a lot of others I've been able to improve a lot in 3 seasons. I don't know where my ceiling is but I'm doing my best to reach it.
SW: What do you think of facing Gene Hamilton on Sunday?
DH: I'm pumped! He might throw for 500 on us but it's probably our last time to face a legend so we gotta take our shots.
At this point the power went out bringing an abrupt end to our interview. We hope to have Dwayne Hernandez on again.
