Speculation is rampant across all media outlets. The King is retiring. This according to various “inside” people close to Dwight Burger. This seems to have taken precedent over the most important game of the season for the Newark Bulldogs. The Bulldogs find themselves grasping and clawing onto the final playoff spot. They will need to win their game against rival Vermont Mountaineers, but will also need help from the Dakota Spirit as they play the Madison Demons. This is the only scenario in which the Bulldogs will make another postseason run. This, one year after making it to the NC Championship game. The media focus is now off the team and solely on Burger. Burger has allegedly told some close friends that this will be his last year in Newark. On the surface, it sounds as though Burger is retiring, but we prefer to look at this from another angle.
Back in 2016, right before the Imperial Bowl, Burger and the Bulldogs came to an agreement which kept Burger from reaching the FA market. It was a 4 yr deal with a performance clause. That clause would allow Burger to become a UFA should he reach 4000yds passing in 2018. Considering the Bulldogs genetic make up and Burger’s past statistics, you would have thought this plateau unattainable. Fast forward to today and we see that Burger is having his best statistical season ever. In fact, that unattainable plateau is only 213yds away. If Burger was able to reach 4000yds and become an UFA, he could be on the move. Perhaps the Bulldogs are ready to move on. For years the knock has been that Burger cannot win the big game. His playoff record is 2-6 with a QB rating drop of a full 33 points compared to regular season games. Even look at this year as an example. Key big games against Oakland, Tulsa, Lawrence, Pennsylvania, and Vermont and he goes 1-5 in those games.
So while the other media outlets focus on the player and whether or not he’s hanging up the cleats, our team at the star ledger see’s this as an attempt by Burger and his team to steal the spotlight from the rest of the team. We have for 5 words for you Mr.Burger. Go win a big game. Or maybe it was 5 other words. Good bye and good riddance.
