  • Who is Stephen Scott?

When you had this game circled as a must see game when the schedule came out, it was likely not under the circumstances that you are seeing it now. 1 month ago we saw this game being billed as Donovan vs. Burger, Wilson vs. Jamison, East vs. West, NC playoff preview, etc, etc. However, after watching Oaklands stud QB Horace Donovan being carted off the field in last week’s tough loss to upstart Fresno, the picture looks a little different heading in to Sunday. All the other titles still apply, but to me the new feature is about a 1st round quarterback finally getting his shot. A shot to start for what could be the rest of the 2018 season. When I say a 1st round quarterback finally getting a shot, you’re likely think of a young man who has waited 2 or 3 years for his chance. Wrong. Enter Stephen Scott. A guy who was drafted last decade and is now in his 10th year. Sure, he’s posting a 1-7 career starting record, but those were all on some pretty bad Lousiana VooDoo squads.

So what does the future hold for Scott in Oakland?
I think he will do a fantastic job. He will have no trouble fitting in with what could be a high powered Oakland offense. Mark my words here folks. Scott will lead the Assassins to a division title.

    How will our Bulldogs fair?
Scott is the wildcard here. How much can he absorb in 1 week of practice? He’s never been surrounded by this much talent on offense. He even has an offensive line to protect him and give him time to go through his progressions. Newark is currently boasting the best defense in the IFL up to this point. If there was ever going to be a difficult test for Scott, this is it. How I see it playing out is that Scott will come out completing 6 of his first 8 attempts. The Bulldogs defense will adjust, and hold him in check for the most part. I’m thinking somewhere around 180-220yds passing with 1 TD and 1 INT.

What’s the real Story going to be in Oakland?
We have the best 2 back’s in the IFL today going head to head. We have a Hurricane going against a Situation. It’s not very often you see the 2 best at what they do square off against eachother. Wilson was never really able to get going in last year’s matchup going 12 for 54yds. Jamison, on the other hand, was the focal point of the Newark offense as he had 25 for 131yds. I expect Oakland to lean on Wilson, but they will continue to do it in different ways. With Scott in at QB, look for Wilson to be the main target in the passing game this week. Jamison has struggled to find open holes to run through this year and is only averaging 3.3 yards per carry. Some might say it’s because both Orlando and Houston sold out to stop the run. Jamison is hoping that his fortunes change this week with all of the media attention focusing on the matchup.

So who will win the game?
    Perfect football weather.
Game is in Oakland, but Newark is favored by 3.5pts.
Last year when these teams met, Newark pulled out a tough win in a low scoring game. Not so sure that will happen this year. If Oakland wins, will that really be considered an upset? I can make a case for either team to win this game, but I will not. I will just sit in the press box and enjoy 2 of the top teams in the IFL going head to head. These are the kind of games that make me wonder how I get paid to do this.
