  • Bulldogs President Sits down with........

    Alfred E. Newman

Hello Matt, thanks for sitting with us.

Hey, no problem. I always like to make time

Now that the draft is over, what do you think about your draft class?

Well, when you trade away all your picks, it’s hard to get good players. Now I’m not saying that we didn’t get any good players, but I thought we could’ve done better. I mean, I think we picked the first inside LB and it was the end of the 2nd round. There was a couple of times I tried to move up, but I didn’t really have any assets to trade. My goal was to get an ILB, T, S, RB, TE, and QB….and not in that order. When push came to shove, we just did what we thought we could with the picks we had. I wouldn’t say we are overly excited about our draft, but we’re not disappointed either. It’s way too early to tell. I do know that we didn’t have a 1st rnd pick and therefore don’t have anything shiny to show off.

Rumor has it that you were not even in the Bulldog war room?

I had business to attend to elsewhere. That’s why RIM makes blackberry’s. I kept in touch with things as well as I could, just maybe not as
    well as I’d have liked.

So what is the next step for the Bulldogs after being 1 win away from the Imperial Bowl

Well, we’re kind of in a strange position. We have an older team and I think that we’re pretty good. We simply didn’t have enough high picks in recent years to bring in too much youth, so we’re playing with the cards that we have. I hope that our guys don’t all of a sudden become old, but we understand that there is a possibility of that happening. SO we are just going to go in and see where the chips fall. I honestly believe that Lawrence is going to be back to where they normally are. Vermont made huge strides last year. Then you factor in all the work that Orlando has done in their rebuilding phase. I don’t know if what we have is good enough to finish higher than 3rd in our division. That said, we have an identity and will continue to be who we are and will continue to be the best we can be.

It sounds as though you think you will be having a down year.

Not necessarily. What I’m saying is that if we do slip early, and with our schedule it would be very easy, it may end up being a long season. We made some changes with our coaching staff in hopes that they can keep the ship going in the right direction. I really would like to win an Imperial Bowl, and the sooner the better. I think it would be really nice to finally pull one out after all these years.

It was rumored that you were shopping for a QB this offseason. Is that true? What does that mean for Dwight Burger?

It is true. It was no secret that we believed that a top notch QB could put us over the hump. We explored some options, but the fact was simple. We just don’t have the assets to go and acquire anyone like that. This was no shot at Burger, I can assure you of that. Dwight is a top level QB. We were looking for an elite QB. We felt that an elite QB would bring out more in our WR corps. I feel that they are not playing up to par and thought a new QB might help that situation. We realized quickly that Burger was going to continue to be our guy. We have faith in him. I like to think we know what we’re getting from him on a weekly basis. He’s a solid pro. He’s not the 2nd ranked QB of all time for nothing. I think he had a down year last year despite setting personal high for passing yards. He’s got to do better in the playoffs, that’s all. Who knows, this could be his last shot at a title.

Speaking of QB’s, you’ve been criticized recently for not developing a QB. You went yet another draft without drafting a QB. What is the plan exactly? It’s not like Wes Schultz is a kid anymore.

Thank you captain obvious. We have been trying to go out and find a young QB, but we haven’t gotten our guy yet. I know Burger is old and really could retire at any point now. Schultz is a guy that we have faith in. I was really pissed off when LOU signed Rodney Barker. I wished he would’ve stayed here a while longer, but when we his agent told us the offers he had, we had to pass. So what’s our plan? Maybe we’ll draft a guy next year in the draft. We shall see……sorry that’s my phone, I gotta run
