The Voodoo are coming off a dismal season with a record that's identical to the year before. It was a year littered with inconsistent play week to week, and the offense could never get in a groove as QB Alfred Sullivan struggled to stay on the field, battling injuries all season long. However through all frustating heartbreaks and blowouts, the Voodoo's defense showed flashes of what could be in years to come, mostly because of the play of Defensive Rookie of the Year Phillip George. I sat down with our GM this week to talk about the moves he's made to better this hungry Voodoo squad in 2018.
SB: Hey Wolf, thanks for taking some time out for this today.
Wolf: Hey no problem man.
SB: Ok lets get right into it. You were pretty quiet in the offseason dealing with trying to get key players resigned until you made the move for the Phantoms saftey Monty Wollmuth. What type of impact do you think he'll have this season?
Wolf: I think Monty will give us a more productive guy on the back end of our defense. He is always around the ball and very good in run support. I do feel he has better ball skills than most think, so we may move him to free safety in the base 3-4. I think his skill set will allow us to move him around in certain packages though.
SB: Do you think he is worth a future 1st round pick?
Wolf: I wouldn't have made the move if I didn't believe that haha.
SB: Ok, now in the draft in the you had a shot at T Dusty Hickson, which would have filled a big need for the o-line. Instead you went with CB Grady Collier with your 1st pick of the draft, what gives?
Wolf: I felt that Grady would allow us to do more things in the secondary, and give us the best chance at trying to match some of these powerful passing attacks in the league with depth on the back end.
SB: Do you think he can keep the Defensive Rookie of the Year title in Louisiana for a consective year?
Wolf: He has the skill set to do so I believe. QB's around the league will have to pick there poison when they drop back to pass and they'll most likely go to the new guy. We didn't through him in there with out help though - Monty will save him him when he gets too aggresive and makes a mistake.
SB: Ok, now let me ask you - Where are you at with SILB Irv Cordona and his holdout situation?
Wolf: I had to take care of some other things at first but we just went through some talks about a new contract last night over the phone. His leadership is very important to this football team and I intend to keep him around. I promise we'll get a deal done soon.
SB: Alright well thats all I have for you, thanks for letting us stop by today.
Wolf: No problem man.
