Week one looms ahead and our beloved Black and Blue head to New Jersey to face arch-rival Newark. Much is made around the Lawrence area of how we were the only team to beat the Super Bowl champs twice last season yet no one seems to talk about how we've yet to beat Newark. Perhaps because of aching hearts still feeling the infamous "extra point game"??? I shudder at the memory.
Newark boasts a talented defense that will be a great opening game test for the Phantom offense, which the coaching staff has vowed will put more points on the board this season. Justin Jones will be too much for any two Phantom offensive linemen to stop no matter where he lines up, Domingo Persuad and Jamison Roland own the middle and the secondary is made up of an alarming number of ballhawks. It'll be a tough day for Phantom's QB Tobias Stanfield but one that he'll have to work through if he's to take the first step towards erasing last season's embarrassing performance and securing a future with the Lawrence franchise.
When on defense our boys have to stop ultra-solid QB (when he's healthy) Chris Chaplin. Newark brass paid big money in the off-season to WR Andrew Robey in order to insure that Chaplin's favorite target didn't find his way outta dodge. You gotta expect the duo to attempt to connect on more than a few occasions and it's up to the Lawrence defense to deny them. The Phantomn D will be led by defensive tackle Edmund Peacock, who has been an absolute terror to offensive lines so far during pre-season and was recently quoted as possibly being the league's best DT in a recent 2004 media prediction.
I expect another low scoring contest between the two clubs. Hopefully this time our boys will get the "W".
