The time was 4.28... The place was the 2017 IFL Draft Room... The mood, desperate.
Teams had been trying to "sell low" since the 3rd round but there was nary a buyer in sight. This was undeniably widely viewed as the worst draft class in IFL history.
Churning in the Phantoms War Room were cool heads intent on using their 50+ seasons' experience to prevail.
"The Game doesn't change" said Head Phantom Jester Blaze. "Certain variables undoubtedly will but ultimately it's me using the resources that I acquire vs you and the resources you've acquired.
We knew there was gonna be talent up until, and through, the 7th round in this draft as there is in every other. Hell, there's gonna be undrafted players from 2017 to make rosters!! We had to due or homework like any other draft and turn our potential (draft picks) into production (players).
Gene presents an excellent risk vs. reward and that's the kind of thing that tickles my nuts."
Defensive Coordinator Rob Shelton is loving his new toy so far.
"We're very excited about the project we've got in Gene Morton! I had spotted Gene early on in the season. He had been playing DE at Georgia, which was overloaded with linebackers, but appeared to be a natural at the skills needed to play LB at the IFL level. With both the "floor" and "ceiling" low on the traditional draft choices the Chief gave us the nod to select Morton and his potential is evident already in practices and our first pre-season game. It's not hyperbole to suggest that he might be the heir apparent to The Leash!"
Owner/GM Jester Blaze just couldn't remain silent on the subject: "These are the moments you cherish and the ones that separate teams in the end. I mean we're talking stealing perhaps the best LB in the draft - in a Linebacker starved league - at damn near the 5th round! ESPN ran an article during the 2nd Round about how hard it was to find talent at the position in this league! We turned around and unveiled a potential All-Pro a day and almost 3 rounds later! Yeah, in a competitive league with top-notch GMs that feels good!
Add in the production of last season's 2.5, Willie Bohannon, at DE and we've actually lucked into some quality young defenders to set the foundation for the future all the while our focus was on our OLine. That's Phantom balance and use of resources!"
It certainly is and time's are good in Lawtown!
