1.13 (traded up from 1.18 for 3.4): Jeff Swasey, C - Jeff projects as a 10+ year potential All-Pro. We all know that most of the time such predictions don't pan out but we felt that Jeff was the last of a certain tier player left on the board, which I think justifies the jump to nab him. The plan is to start him from day 1, though he'll have to beat out incumbent Myron Green in TCs to do so.
2.3: Russell McBrayer, S - Russell was actually the 2nd player left on our draft board but with Georgia picking at 2.4 we gambled, correctly so, that Toby V would be available in 2 more picks. Russell had the fastest 40 time of all safeties, which seems to have worked for us last season with Dwayne Hernandez, and other measurables which we liked. We've now got extreme competition at the safety position and should be able to make it through any injuries the season may throw our way.
2.5: Toby Vaughn, RB - Toby appears to be in the mold of a "Phantom Back". He's shown some toughness so far in his college career but 20 reps on the bench show that he's increasing in strength as he gets older and our scouts believe he has room to improve. He's also got great endurance and, IFL gods willing, will hold onto the ball!
2.10: Jamie Segas, FB - Jamie had a very impressive combine and logically would make a great RB however he's pissing and moaning about the switch so it looks like we'll have 2 disgusting FBs on our roster this season as I see if this ass pans out.
2.30: Dre' Scibona, P - Dre' is the real prize of this draft! Phantoms Phans have had to endure horrible punter play for too long. We're expecting to pin many a team behind their own 20 for a long time to come now, which should go a long way towards W's.
This is where team owner/GM was suddenly unavailable and staff scrambled to keep things afloat.
3.17: Leland Montes, TE - With no Head around the staff in the War Room was a bickering mess of OC's touting offensive players, DCs touting defensive players, and STC's touting special teams monsters. In the end they went with the top player on a sheet of paper on my desk. They had no way of knowing that that was a sheet of "late rounders" and that I was going to go more of "best of what's left" at 3.17.
3.29: Thomas Houston, WR - WR is always a need with a 6 player requirement in a passing league. Houston is just the latest gamble at the position.
4.10: Antonio Farrell, OLB - Our scouts didn't particularly like Antonio but as the draft wore down his combine grew more and more impressive. OLB has always been a thorn in our side so he'll have every opportunity to earn a roster spot.
4.28: Gene Morton, DE->LB - Some people leave the draft early. I say the late rounds is where it can get fun! Gene presents a possible switch to LB with his height, weight and skillset. What will come of it? That's the fun of late rounders... for a mere 4.28 we might have hit on what previous coaches missed! We were also looking at Lewis Beyer for this potential switch, who went to Wichita 4 picks earlier.
