Group Against "Whalers" Name

Hartford - A group of activists met outside of Grizzlies Stadium to protest the proposed name of the franchise to the Hartford Whalers. The demonstrators were against the name "Whalers" due its negative connotation of animal cruelty.

"Whaling was a dark time in history. These murders almost killed all of these beautiful creatures," said protest leader Logan Moonbeam. Moonbeam is the head of the Hartford PETA organization. Mr. Moonbeam and his wife, Marigold, called on their "family members" to come out against the suggested name change.

"We are also against the name 'Grizzlies.' These capitalist pigs use the image of the majestic bear to gain profit," yelled Mrs. Moonbeam. When asked what the franchise should be called Mrs. Moonbeam suggested, "How about the Hartford Recyclers. Or the Hartford Hybrids, that has a nice ring to it. Hartford Tree Huggers, I don't know."

"Yeah, man. Killing whales is bad, man," said demonstrater know only as 'Patches.' When this reporter told 'Patches' that they didn't actually kill whales, that it was just a name, 'Patches' replied, "Wait. What? Killing whales is bad, man."

Vancouver team officials issued the following statement today regarding the controversial proposed Hartford name change...

"We find it abhorrent and completely unacceptable for Hartford to utilize the name 'Whalers'. To glorify a group whose purpose is to murder the most intelligent and beautiful mammals to grace the seas represents a total disrespect for proud Killer Whales franchise and their legions of loyal fans. It would be like if there was a team called the 'Stallions to Dog Food' or 'Wolfpack Eradication Program' or 'Japanese Imperial Soldiers'. We expect the league commissioners office to step in and do their duty to protect the league from this potential travesty."

Tyler Dupis, leader of the 'Bring Back the Whalers' movement, made a statement via his web site in response to the complaints of the Vancouver Killer Whales and of the animal rights protest.

"We have no intention on bringing light on the travesty that is whale hunting. We are strongly against the fishing and killing of whales. Actually, the name 'Whalers' has nothing to do with the murder of any animal. As you can see here, a 'whaler' is a whaling ship or a whaleboat. We are just proud of the long, seafaring culture of Hartford. We want to rename the team after a boat. We could have chose any boat but 'whaler' just sounds better.

Now, Vancouver, we can see how you would be against the name change. As stated above, we aren't 'whale killers.' We are boats. So there is nothing for you to be worried about. And even IF we were whale killers, you have nothing to be worried about. As you can see here and here, Orcas are not whales at all. They are dolphins. So unless we are going to change our name to the 'Hartford Dolphin Clubbers', your argument has no basis in this discussion.

A clearly agitated spokesperson for the Killer Whale Preservation Society hastily issued the following reply to the Hartford web post...

Of course "whaler" has everything to do with the wholesale massacre of innocent whales. Citing Wikipedia (reluctantly)...

A whaler is a specialized ship, designed for whaling, the catching and/or processing of whales.

If you desire to name your team after a boat, we suggest the S.S. Minnow.

Now if you wish to change your name to "Dolphin Clubbers", you'll get no argument here. Everyone knows that Killer Whales don't get along with those snooty dolphins.

I feel for these players. While playing hockey in Middle School, I was forced to play on the 'Whalers' team. The jersey simply said 'Whaler'. Not a great Jersey to make a chubby kid walk around middle school with.
