Wes Dole moves into the starting spot at left guard this week as 9-year vet Skip Browning skips on over to right guard to finish off his career. Wes is now the 5th Phantoms rookie starter on a 10-2 squad.
We sit once again with owner/GM Jester Blaze to discuss this and other topics.
You've said before that rookies shouldn't start. Yet currently almost 25% of the Phantoms' starters are rookies.
"Rookies shouldn't start. That's the guideline. But every situation merits it's own decision. Wes Dole for instance isn't a better player than Everett LaRue right now but starting Wes right now gives us the best chance to go further in the post-season since we'd like to see him develop a little more and our veteran OGs aren't going to forget how to play in 4 weeks. RZAc would be starting for any IFL team. You just can't keep a talent like that off the field!"
Are you surprised to be 10-2 with so many rooks on the field?
"Yes."
Care to elaborate on that?
"I thought we'd win slightly less games, especially with this season's schedule. Instead we've won more."
Is this the best Phantoms draft yet?
"Time will tell but it sure has a chance to be. We've got the 5 current starters, a DT that's already seeing quality time, and a TE and SS that we're expecting to boom in the next few seasons. If you can get more than 4 starters out of a given year then that's a good year, 7 would be insane!!"
How could things have gone better?
"We could've nabbed Donnie Cortez, OLB, but Hartford snagged him at 1.19. Interestingly Hartford was targeting Wes Dole and we got there first on that one.
Maybe we should've given more credit to the RBs. Our running game is suffering and there's some quality rookies tearing up IFL fields right now."
Speaking of RBs. There's a hella talented one coming up in tomorrow's game.
"You ain't kidding. Bobby O is definitely one of the league's best. We've faced him one time before and held him to 38 on 8 carries though and traditionally don't get run over too much so I have faith in our Copelandless defense to get the job done!"
"Check this out, Spark. I gotta get going. Can we pick this up later?"
Sure thing, JB, sure thing.
There we go folks. Some more useless rubble from the Lawrence Phantoms media.
