New Boston head coach Sammy Harvey told reporters Tuesday that, despite the electric onfield presence of rookie Reuben "Picante" Sante, Angelo Hairston will remain the team's starter. "There is no quarterback controversy on this team," Harvey said in his postgame interview. "I repeat....there is no quarterback controversy."
Following Angelo Hairston's abysmal performance in the Dragons' first preseason game, questions abounded as Sante worked with the first team through parts of last week's practice. When asked if Hairston's three first half interceptions in the initial preseason game caused the increased reps, Harvey was quoted as saying, "Last year, injuries at QB caught this team offguard. That's the sole reason we're preparing Reuben."
Hairston played a lone series in this week's affair before giving way to the 1st round pick. Though Sante completed less than fifty percent of his passes, a 36 yard run early in the fourth quarter drew applause from the partisan Newark crowd. The designed play left even the 1st year head coach shaking his head. "The amazing thing about that run was that Newark was flagged for too many men on the field on the play. Reuben ran for 36 yards against 12 players."
Harvey's press conference became testy after local reporters continued to ask about the likelihood of Hairston giving way to Sante. "Look," Harvey said. "Angelo Hairston won the @#&damn game last week. Interceptions Schminterceptions. He won it for us late. Reuben played above expectations this week, but we @#&damn lost, didn't we. Was there something about that I missed? Ain't this game all about the W's?"
Hairston, after going 6-8 as a starter in 2003 with 12 interceptions to only 11 td's, signed a two year extension in the offseason. He makes far less money than the rookie, leading to rumors that Hairston's days may be numbered.
