  • Hartford - California mega trade revisited

I'm fairly new to this league, but this trade by a previous GM was recently brought to my attention. I figured I'd dig around, see what the draft picks turned into and all that fun stuff. Now here's what the original deal was:

    California gets:
1.1 , OT Young and Schulz
California used that 1.1 pick to draft the current highest rated QB in the IFL, Albert Schwartz (96/96). Schwartz has yet to live up to his ratings though through his first 2 seasons. He's posted a 13-19 record as a starter with a QB rating of 82.4. His completion percentage, yards, and touchdowns all dropped from his rookie season to his 2nd. On the plus side, he threw less interceptions despite throwing more passes. We'll see if he burst onto the scene in his 3rd season.

RT Ralph Young (66/66) is entering his 6th season and has been a key part of the O-Line. He has started every game for California/Fresno while amassing a KRB percentage of 38.7 and allowing 9 sacks in 974 passing plays (0.092%)

QB Rusty Schulz was also included, but was released shortly there after and retired following the 2014 season.

In the next post, we'll look at what Hartford did with those picks.

Here's what the Grizzlies ended up with:

RB Lamont Schultz (47/47) - There was a logjam in the backfield last season, but Schultz will be splitting carries with 2nd year starter Charlie Maxwell this season. Schultz looked good in his 1st season in Hartford, running for 786 yards in the backup role. Management hopes he can repeat those numbers while becoming more involved in the passing game

DE Monty Alcott (36/36) - Never played a game for the Grizzlies and was released in Week 1 of the 2014 season. Is currently on the roster in Salt Lake City.

With the 1.17 pick of the 2014 draft, they drafted DE Jason Hardy (48/48). With a ton of depth at the defensive end position, Hardy hasn't seen the field much and is currently on the trade block. Management has stated though that if he isn't moved, he will compete with Marc Blair for the starting LDE spot in the upcoming preseason.

Hartford also received the 3.29 pick in the 2014 draft, which they used to select OLB Wesley Reno (37/37). Like Hardy, Reno hasn't seen the field much, having only been in on 141 plays over 2 seasons. Management isn't high on him though and he'll need a strong camp and preseason if he's going to stay on the roster.

Now on to the 2015 draft. With the 1.11 pick, they took DT Nick Baerg (46/63). Baerg served as a backup his rookie year, but played well in the limited action racking up 4 sacks in 160 passing plays. Look for Baerg to push for a starting spot, but either way he should see an increase in playing time for here on out.

G Phillip Benveniste (31/50) was selected with the 2.17 pick, the first of 3 2nd rounders they got in this trade. Benveniste played a backup role last season, and that will continue this season. He's looked good in passing situations (only 1 sack allowed in 186 plays), but he'll need to improve on the 26.3% in key run blocks though.

(off to eat dinner and spend time with the fiancee before work... to be continued lol)

There was a regime change after Schwartz's first start. Before the trade deadline Mullin was traded. Then in 2015 Chapman went down and AS lost his security blanket.

I expect ASs performance to improve this season. But really there was a total reset heading into his second season. Basically all new WRs and a string of uneffective RBs.

That being said I really wish I could unwind that trade, but I do like ASs finish to both his rookie and second season. Will hopefully not start out so slow this season

I remember that trade - I was subbing for the Grizzlies at the time - and I thought HA made a mistake cause Schwartz did not go to the combines. HA was right though AS is a stud. I gotta get him some weapons though.

for all the great draft picks that were acquired looks like you only got 1 good player out of it.

Keep in mind that who HA drafted reflects his drafting ability and not the trade itself. I believe most GMs who pride themselves on drafting would net better value with the 8 (?) total picks than with the 1.1/Schwartz - though Schwartz, on paper, is the best single talent the league's ever seen.

ON paper maybe..he really hasn't played up to his bars quite yet. IMO, Lozier is the single best talent the leagues ever seen, and he has the rings to prove it.

yet if you go over the 8 picks i don't think there was better value. What happened to so many prime draft picks? how do you wind up with a closet full of mediocrity.

I'm probably misunderstanding you but are you saying HA's specific selections basically represent the optimum that could've been netted with those picks?

I'll agree that HA's choices didn't match up to Schwartz but the power of those picks combined would've been devastating in the hands of a good drafter. It would've been reminiscent of the Hershel Walker NFL trade that set the stage for the Cowboys dynasty.

yeah you are confusing me now.

what HA's choices? I thought we were talking about Hartford's choices? I thought Hartford was the one whom got all the draft picks.

                            Maybe I am a homer.

From what I read It looked like hartford recieved 2 1sts 4 2nds 2 3rds and didnt draft nobody great and 1 person good with all those picks. Did I miss something?

I was Lurking, I was not involved in the trade as far as I remember. Anyways I remember the trade and would not have went with Schwartz, but glad HA did.
