MULES SELECT TE LESTER GERHARDT OUT OF ILL ST UNIVERSITY

With the first pick the mules looked toward the futre and select a TE that may or maynot have immediate impact but will definate have a long term impact. When asked why Gerhardt over Jonathan Lee all TUFFY said was" Cause he's a guy that I can relate to and communicate with. Nothing fancy about him excpet his performance. And when the game is all said and done, you can out to a local corner bar and have a beer. He doesn't need all that hype and attention that get you in trouble. He just a solid down to earth guy who loves the game of football. Oh ya... and he fit our offense too. I guess thats important as well."
What seemed to start off as a normal draft day for the Mules ended up being somehwat of a circus. But when it was all said and done, Mules GM, TUFFY, was pleased with the outcome.
The first move TUFFY made on draft day was trading LT Warren Marquez to the Dakota Spirit for a 2nd and 5th round pick in next years draft. When asked why the move and how he planned on filling Marquez spot, TUFFY replied "Well if your going to responsable for 25% of the sacked your QB took, then you know that shits gotta to change. We discussed it with Warren weather he would like to stay with the Mules as a back up or possible go start some where else. He choose the ladder and thats what he got. I hope he's happy, and I wish the best for him. The plan roght now is to have Quinn Colley play LT. This isn't set in stone but I feel he will make a nice transition from RT to LT and protect Opie."
Going into the draft with the 12th pick the Mules first had their eye on TE Amos Morton but figured that if he actually fell to them, which they weren't expecting, but TUFFY said that they would take him with open arms. " Amos looked to be one of those players that if you were fortunate enough to aquire him, then you need to go to chirch and thank God. He a good talent, but we knew going in that we would probably be making a move once he was drafted."
Thats exactly what the Mules enede up doing. Trading the 1.12 for a 1st next yr and a 2nd & 4th this year. " I like having options for future drafts. You can never be to sure when you might need more pick than the league gives you." TUFFY then added " At the time we felt like our guy would still be there at the 1.30 and was willing to take the gamble." Form that time to laterin the draft somethng changed cause the Mules then traded back up to the 1.21 to select their first round pick. When asked "why the sudden move", TUFFY only had this to say. " I had a hunch, and I wanted to make sure we got our guy. We may have overpaid slightly but that is yet to be seen. Bottom line is if we wouldn't have made the move, we wouldn't have gotten Gerhardt and I would have missed out on some drinking time at th bar. Nonetheless, we did what we had to do and I am really pleased that we got the guy that was targetted on our board. As far as whats next.... your gues is probably better than mine."
