Today we sit with the newest guest in our ever-growing segment Better Know an IFL District!, the beer drinking Man from the Murf and current AC South Champion, Tuffy! Tuffy heads a powerhouse of a team coming off a 15-1 season: The Fightin' Mules!!!
SC: Before we start I have a special present for you this evening. Jimmy? Bring that on out here!
(Jimmy wheels out a keg of Tuffy's favorite beer, Miller Lite)
SC: There ya go. How's that treat you?
T: Wow !!! There's more head on that beer than I got from my first wife
(Chugs first beer) Thank you sir, may I have another?
SC: Naturally.
T: Liquid sandwiches..... Its what for dinner !!! Now just bring out some jamison and I can mix up some river-hounds for dessert.
SC: You lost to the Beasts by 2 points in last season's AC Championship game. They appear on your schedule as a week 7 opponent. What can we, as fans, expect from that game?
T: Well... I should say that our goal for this organization is to win the championship and we can only do that by taking the season week by week not looking too far ahead so the first team in our sights is Divisional Matchup with the Voodoo. But I would be lying if I ended my answer with that. Honestly, The fans should be looking for some hard nose football in week 7. There are alot of guys in the locker room who have already circled that week on the calendar with their own blood. We're not happy the way our season ended last year. It not that we feel cheated... Just pissed off. So that game will probably be played with more emotion than skill.
SC: You sent an IFL great, Warren Farley, to the Oakland Devil Dogs for what was ultimately 1.26, 3.1, 4.1, 4.7, two 1sts and a 5th in 2016 giving Oakland perhaps the two best and most injury prone corners in the IFL. Please give us a little insight on this move, the motivation behind it, and what it means to Mules' fans.
T: One thing I learned early on in this league is that in order to stay on top you have to make sacrifices. When I first came to this organization I was looking to trade Mangum and keep Farley. As it turns out Farley is gone and Mangum will probably retire a mule. So in order to keep on top of replacing key postions we traded one guy to get more support on our O-line to protect Opie and in the next draft we will have 3 1st round picks to keep filling holes instead of paying out the ass in FA. We also knew that to keep Warren on the pay roll, we would lose other good players to stay under the cap. So the decision wasn't that difficult to let him go. We wish the best for him in Oakland.
SC: Switching gears. Which came first, the Mule or the Egg?
T: How bout you get me another beer and let me think about this for a while.....
SC: Opie: Best season in just about every imaginable catagory last year. How much does he have left and what are his chances of grabbing himself a Ring before it's all over?
T: He has alot left in the tank. Our job is to make sure he has the weapons to do his job. His job is to utilize them which we feel he has. Hence why we drafted G Tony Haan in the first round. Opie took way too many hits and was sacked way too much. This is the 2nd year we drafted a G with our first pick so I think it shows that we want to protect him as much as we can so he can preform to his best.
SC: Is there anyone in the AC South who can challenge you in 2015?
T: Ahhhh... ( chuckles )..... On paper, NO. But you know as well as I do that when your the IFL Bowl, conference, or even divisional champ, teams are going to be gunning for you. Houston's bark is worse than their bite, Voodoo is under new management, and St Louis is ... well St Louis. I think the odds are in our favor to repeat as divisional champs.
SC: It says here that you've got a league low 3 players who became Mules via Free Agency. I don't have a question but I just want you to know that our stat team is on the job and aware of this tidbit!
SC: Anyway, I hear you're into Harleys. What do you have?
T: I built my own chopper using an existing sporster frame. I ride to relax. What I'm most into is dirt late model racing. There's nothing like being behind the wheel of a 800 hp car sliding sideway thru turns pulling the left front tire off the ground. Now thats a rush.
SC: Will there be a Mules edition in the future?
T: Give me another beer... i don't have any idea what is in the future....
SC: The Mules led the IFL in points scored in 2014 with almost 10 points per game more than the previous season. Fluke or something we should expect to see again in 2015?
T: Thats the plan. Run up the score so the other team has to take chances just to stay in the game. Make it as easy on our defense as possible and keep them fresh. People say defense wins championships.... Unfortunately I can't argue that yet being we haven't won one. But when we do I'll be the first to tell them differently.
SC: Well that's all the time that we have. As always, if you could stand in front of the IFL and make one insightful point. What would it be?
T: Live for today as if it was the last.
People get so tied up with worrying about things they have no control over that they can't enjoy the today.
yesterday was the past
tomorrow is the future
but today is a present....
Hey Stephen, can I take a beer or two for the road ????
SC: Certainly. Just don't pull a Donte Stallworth on us.
We now turn your attention to Joan Rivers attempting to sing the Alice Cooper classic "Man Behind the Mask".
