With Columbus Charles Walton started 12 games in his first two seasons, but production
declined along with playing time as Charles was a depth player with 16 looks in 2005.
But Johnboy Walton was a priority player target of Mules GM Kobeck after the
selection of Peterson at 1.1 in 2006. Kobeck tried with persistance but
without success to pry the Fire deep reserve WR from new Columbus GM Iceman.
After three games of 2006 intransient Fire GM David Iceman finally relented
and allowed Charles to become a Mule. "Johnboy", as the Murfreesboro fans called
him, was immediatly elevated to the Mules WR1 slot in week 4 of 2006. Working
with rookie QB Opie Peterson Walton posted pedesterian numbers.
Charles "Johnboy" Walton went on to start 61 games for Murfreesboro and still
holds the Mules record for TD receptions at 25. Although by the time the Mules
were contenders in the AFCS Walton was past his prime he still was putting up
good numbers as a reserve. "Johnboy" will always be remembered as Petersons big
play man while the Mules were rebuilding themselves in the IFL.
The trade of reserve WR Charles "Johnboy" Walton not only revived the career of the
Okemah Oklahoma native it provided a quality target for future IFL MVP Otis Peterson
during his early years.
