Texas 2014 Team News
There were many changes in Texas this off-season, But none bigger than the retirement of WR Grady Gomez. Gomez came to a Texas team that had only one winning season in the team's history. With Gomez in the lineup the team would go to the playoffs three Straight years. I made a trade that would probably go down in Texas history as the biggest reason for the winning of the 2012 Imperial Bowl.(thank you HA
) He will truly be missed. He holds the record for "Career Receiving TD's" with 92 although Ernest Martinez has a chance to catch him this year.(86) In retiring from the IFL Gomez had his best year in 2013, 13 TD's on 1809 yds for a 18.2 avg.
Another big retirement was Head coach Lester Mineo as he called it a day, retiring after a 10 year career that started in Wichita , lasting for 3 years and a stint at Montréal. He held a 85-82-1 life time record. Not known as a offensive genius, He took Chung, Gomez and Watt and put together a 16-3 record in 2012 and winning his 1st and only bowl appearance.
Although the loss of Mineo hurt the Texas ownership, they went to work immediately after the season and signed Portland HC Donnell Mills to a 5 yr contract. With his excellent offensive play calling he should take the edge off of losing Gomez. Also he has great skills in injury avoidance, as that was a problem last year. All in all I'm looking forward to seeing the team react to a different skill set.
This years draft was sort of weird for Texas as the 2nd round pick DE Anthony Herkel looks to be a better pick than the 1st round pick DT Mickey Blum. Only time will tell. In training camp I put emphasis on special teams and conditioning as that was the biggest problem last year. Let the games begin!
