DDT here. I took over the Wichita franchise a few sims prior to the draft, but haven't contributed much yet. Here goes.
Wichita Draft Review: I entered the draft with these goals: Replacing a very good OG lost in FA, and beginning the process of rebuilding a bad secondary.
1.5 Antoine Nece DE - I tried to move down to where I thought the OL and DB value was, but couldn't find a buyer willing to pay what I felt this pick was worth. Nece was clearly the BPA and will start from day 1. Our biggest DE will also get a shot a DT in nickle and dime sets. I'm thrilled with this pick.
2.4 Sammie Newton OLB - The defensive front 7 was a team strength heading into the draft, so addressing it with our first two picks wasn't the plan. Again BPA. Newton is a solid balanced LB with enough size to move easily between the positions.
3.3 Terrance O'Neal OG - Moved inside from T after draft; will start though not quite ready. Balanced OL who's rate of development could be the key to our offense.
4.6 Darrell Benton CB - Less ready to start than O'Neal, fits what we're trying to do defensively, though. We'll eventually be solid in three coverages and interceptions. Future is as a nickleback.
5.5 Barry Holmes DT - Run stuffing DT. Will become a solid reserve, I hope.
6.4 Colin Haley RB - I liked this guy post draft, but lost some confidence after camp. I'll sneak him on the field as a short yardage specialist. Personally I'm not a fan of drafting RB early or giving them big FA contracts. I'll probably add a guy similar to this every year.
7.3 Larry Erickson OG - Inactive and no chance of fulfilling his rookie contract.
Undrafted Rookie FA's :
Warren Bauer TE - Reserve TE and FB.
Phil Holder WR - Fifth receiver in a very weak receiving corp.
Percy Boyd, Emmanuel Laxton, Edward Graham and Trevor Summers CB's - Summers is on IR. Boyd will begin the season as our dime back and the other 2 will probably see significant PT at some point.
Offensive Skill Players Synopsis: Former 1st rounder QB Winston Scott returns for his 8th season with the Outlaws. Big arm and average intangibles. I want to keep his attempts under 30 per game. Should help him and our questionable defense. QB Jorge Best is a serviceable backup. RB Tracy Norris will be the focal point of our offense. He should easily improve on his 935 yards rushing in 2012. Speedy Shaun Galloway looks like a nice compliment to the power running of Norris. Our third RB will be rookie Colin Haley (6.4) I'm interested in seeing what he can do. Leo Valezquez is an outstanding special teamer and will get a chance to field some kickoffs and punts as well. FB Duane Rau will block. I won't ask him to do much else. I traded TE Kurtis Diep to Georgia in the preseason in the hopes of getting Irv Molnar more opportunities. I believe the former first rounder has been under utilized in Wichita. He can run block and I love his ability to make plays at TE. Gino Markel starts at SE and will be our primary return man. He'll see a lot of balls coming his way with Diep gone. Big play receiver Kim Newman will be our FL and will move into the slot in multiple WR sets. Vets Simon Thompson and Doug Clemmons are our 3rd and 4th WR's. Not sure who is who yet, they're not very good.
Offensive Line Synopsis:
LT George Crump - Solid Bars but gives up too many sacks in a league that doesn't seem to allow many.
LG Earnest Bruce - Great technique and strength. We'll run his way a lot.
C Howie Emmons - Excellent run blocker and LS. Average everywhere else.
RG Terrance O'Neal(R) - Should be a developmental project. Technique bars in the teens. Will have a short leash on his starting role. Did a nice job in preseason.
RT Eric Vitale - OL Leader. Similar bars to Bruce. Could switch sides with Crump, if Crump doesn't improve his pass protection.
Not much depth here, as evidenced by O'Neal starting. C Enoch Vanderpool may start at RG once he's 100%. RG Sean Polanco and LT Howie Campbell will play some.
The offensive flavor is vanilla. Run between the tackles, control the clock and take the occasional shot down the field. Hopefully this will help our awful secondary and disguise our lack of depth at WR. I'm not very familiar with this league, but I can't imagine anyone having a worse defensive backfield or 3rd WR.
Defensive Front Synopsis: Oh yeah, we're switching to a 4-3. We've got quite a bit of talent here. Only real complaint I have is that some of the vets aren't as versatile as I'd like. Seems strange to me that RDE Deion Kinney has started only 17 gms in 5 years. What am I missing? He'll play out of position in our base and goal line sets. Kinney we'll return to his natural spot when we expect a pass. Rookie RDE Antoine Nece will start at the opposite end. As our biggest and strongest DE we'll try to move him inside in the nickle and dime. I'm not sure about this though I've never been a fan of playing DE at DT or vice versa but we need to generate as much of a pass rush as possible with our down linemen. Pass rushing specialist LDE Bernard Hastings will backup Kinney and Nece and start in passing situations. I'm hoping to get some big plays out of him. Veteran LDT Byron Ruth is solid vs the run and pass. He's had a solid career at DT and looks poised to continue. I wish he was a mentor. RDT Julio Durham has great upside as a runstuffing DT, not much of a pass rusher. He'll sit when we play $.05 and $.10. Rookie Barry Holmes will be the extra DT on the goal line. Hopefully he wont play much.
Not quite as much talent at LB as along the DL, but our LB's are very good. Again a lack of versatility is the only complaint. MLB Wes Martin is the best player in this group he'll play out of position at SLB. Wes is among the leagues best LB's in coverage and should be able to handle opponents TE's. SLB Marco Langley will move to Ackerman's vacated MLB position. Langley can do a little of everything and is a great run defender. WLB Levon Tucker is another great run defender. Rookie OLB Sammie Newton has decent potential vs the run, pass and as a pass rusher. He'll be our backup at SLB, MLB in dime sets and a gunner. Newton had a poor camp, but I'm not ready to give up on him, yet. MLB Vince Ackerman will play behind Langley. Veteran LB Hank Tran, is apparently a former star in this league and is one of 3 original Outlaws still with the team. Could be very useful player still if we get banged up.
Our starting front 7 averages a current run defense rating of: 71.4 with a potential of 85.6 The plan is A.) Hope these guys are good enough to do a decent job against the run without selecting it much and B.) Let our 3 talented DE's pin their ears back for 60 minutes.
Defensive Backfield Synopsis: Ughh. I'm gonna be sick. Even more scheming out of this pile of shit but I don't think it will do much good. LCB Korey McGough is our lead corner. That is not a good thing. He started 16 games last season and any improvement on last years stats will be taken as a successful season. Rookie CB Darrell Benton will start at the opposite corner. Benton is the only DB on this team I want around for more than a couple years. He'll move inside when we go to the nickle. CB Jessie Lang will start at SS, trying to get another run defender on the field in a position to make an impact. He'll move back to corner in the nickle and dime. We also have 3 undrafted rookie CB's who'll be forced into playing. They probably shouldn't be on any 53 man roster, though. Veteran safeties Lanny Cain and Fred Flannery are just bad. Flannery is an okay run defender and may be able to come up with a couple interceptions. Cain was the best safety I could find in zone coverage. Cain will start at FS and move to SS when Lang returns to corner.
Basically just moving people around here, and hopefully finding something that will work a couple times a game.
P Teddy Blades - Big leg fits the ball control plan well. 4 carreer PA ranks 4th all time in Wichita, Weird.
K Devin Hanson - Very Accurate not a lot of range.
KO Devin Hanson - We'll need to cover some kickoffs.
LS Howie Emmons
Hld Ricardo Papadopulos

KR Gino Markel - Not thrilled about having to use Markel here. He can be a difference maker in the return game though.
