Thomas Saunders Annouces His Retirement
10 Year veteran cornerback Thomas Saunders announced his retirement following the 2012 season and made it official today by turning his retirement papers into the league. Sanders spent the last seven years of his Career with the Columbia/Georgia franchise and recorded 296 tackles, 7 INTs, a 3 sacks in his IFL career.
Marty Pearson Retained as Head Coach
Showing there commitment to stability with both their roster and staff the Generals made sure to lock up long time head coach Marty Pearson. Pearson is heading into his 10th season as the head coach of the Fire/Generals and plans to make resounding changes this offseason as the team makes a push toward competing in 2013.
Generals Complete 5 Player With Vancouver
Looking to address needs on the offensive line, the Generals worked out a trade with Vancouver that sent long time vets Wes Goad and Christian Cole to the Whales for RT Sedrick Butler and WLB Casey Mueller. Also in the deal Georgia sent T Darryl Brodie and Vancouver sent their 3rd round selection in this years draft.
The Generals are looking for youth and productivity and feel that giving Butler the chance of starting on a regular basis could help the young player develop into an solid starter for them. Mueller helped address the teams need at WLB. Shipping Cole out opens the door for 3rd year pro Mitch Saunders to start at center this season.
Generals Trade Down And Still Get Their Guy
Today the Generals sent there 1.16 and 3.14 selections to Murfreesboro for the Mules 1.24 and 2.16 picks as the Generals looked to add higher selections to address team needs. As luck would have it, the player that the Generals targeted, but thought was a riskier pick at 1.16, was still available when they selected at 1.24. The addition of Casey Lofton will give the team its first true TE threat since Daniel Rich was shipped to Salt Lake in 2008.
