  • One more 'gain against the 'dogs!

    by Spark Wonup
    Lawrence Sun Times

Newark and Lawrence clash for the first time this season this weekend in New Jersey and the fact that both teams are below .500, with the Phantoms a league worst 1-4, isn't nearly enough to stem the passion of this longstanding rivalry! Thousands of Phantom Phans have already begun the journey southward to both see the game in person and, for those unfortunate ones who couldn't score a ticket, to show their support from outside the stadium while grilling up some of the local foods.

One thing all football fans have in common is a love for food and when you go to a game, especially an away game, you've gotta try as much and as many as you can! My good friend Pinky Del Nacho often waxes on and on about the goods they have in Reno but alas, I won't be going anytime soon.

    Moving on...

Should our beloved fall again this week the climb from 1-5 to playoffs will start to look doubtful to even the most optimistic of Phans. Meanwhile Newark doesn't want to head into week 7 with a 2-4 record so neither team can afford a loss.

Marty Silvan, acquired last week from Orlando, has already played the Bulldogs once this season and, though historically not very potent against them, feels this week might be his chance to step up and make a name for himself in Lawrence.

"In my time in Orlando the situation was different and I think Newark focused on me more being a starter before this season. Now I'm playing alongside two great receivers who might command a double team on any given play. I've already seen the 'dogs defense this season so I know at least a little of what to expect and I'm just going to make the most of my chances and I could see that working out well for me."

"I got a little taste of what it's like to catch a Stanfield pass in-game last week and he throws a very comfortable ball. I see no reason why, given the opportunity, I can't have a big day and help us get a W."

Management dictates the behaviour of the players and while most like the braggadocious never-say-die attitude the Phantoms have been showing some are starting to wonder if this is a team with it's head in the sand.

"This is a team clearly in disarrray!," said Ron Jaworski after last weekends games. "And they just refuse to admit it."

Nontheless Vernon Copeland had this to say: "Newark Bulldogs! Marlon Gillette! I don't care what our record is. We 'bout to play some hard-nosed, backyard, beat your neighborhood rival, bring out the stretcher, he's getting winded, smash mouth, in the trenches type of football and I can't wait!"

Neither can we, Vern, neither can we.

Ok now I am pumped for this game!! Great read!

Marty was so quiet in Orlando. Maybe he has found a home in Lawrence. I am excited to see him do well in 14 games a year.

Well Marty got his yards but no "W".

Arnold Greene gave new definition to not showing up to play by dropping about 14 passes. I can remember at one point Greene dropping a pass and the "defense is very familiar with that play" message popping up. I had to chuckle as I thought "Oh the Greene dropped pass play? Yeah, I'm very familiar with it too".

          Thanks Kurt.

Right before the game Marty's agent, Bennie Dunlap, negotiated a 3-year deal to keep Marty in Lawrence for the next few seasons at least. As long as he doesn't get the starting bug he'll have a place to shine as part of our corp.

He never got that flu in Orlando. I bounced him in and out of starting spots without a problem. I think Marty "Silk" Silvan knows he is a slot guy.
