Three games into the 2012 season and the defending Champion Lawrence Phantoms are a 1-2 team without an identity. Long gone it seems is the fiery defense that intimidated opposing offenses all of last season and bailed the team out of the Divisional Game against Texas. Gone is the potent offense almost guaranteed 3 TD's per game. This year's unit is playing more like the football version of the Washington Generals and has phans none too pleased.
"Is this the way they intend to do things? Win one and then let it all go to shit?" asked longtime fan John Quigley of Haverhill, MA. "We're not that easy to appease. We got the Pats, the Sox, the Celts.... They better do something fast. This is bull shit!"
Reasons are plentiful for the meltdown. The lack of secondary talent is blatent even after this week's trade for veteran FS Herman Almieda. All-World talent, Arnold Greene, keeps coming up big in small situations and small to non-existent in the big ones. Hard-nosed RB Harris Mahoney has many wondering if he still is. Jason Dube might only be a mere shell of his former self at left tackle and the rookie, Courtney Woflstone, is a project player at best at the moment. Worst of all though might be the rumors that offensive coordinator Bryant White is having personal issues distracting him, a rumor gaining momentum quickly after the end of today's game.
Yes, it's easy to get down on how the season is playing out but don't die easy Phantom Phans as I'm here to Spark some optimism!! The season is long and there isn't an undefeated team in the division. Newcomer Almieda has all the makings of a prototype Phantom defender and will allow Julio Cleveland to help out some at CB. There's talk of a big secondary shake-up. And oh yeah, Tobias Stanfield is still behind center.
Until next time this is Spark Wonup asking all Phantom Phans to keep the phaith!
