  • Beasts draft review

1.2 - Christian Jacobs - LCB - Little surprise here that the Beasts decided to go with what many people believed was the top corner and perhaps player in the draft. Jacobs has all the tools to be one of the top, if not the top, coverman in the league. And he comes into the league one of the most developed players in the draft pool, so his impact on the West Virginia defense will be immediate.

2.1 - William Hodges - RG - For the second year in a row the Beasts take a chance on a combine skipper with guard Hodges. Hodges had a great year at Wyoming last year that the team feels he won't have much of a problem adjusting to the IFL. If Hodges does work out, he will be a huge steal.

2.22 - Lenny Snodgrass - FS - Not a huge need for the Beasts, but safety Snodgrass had too much talent for them to simply pass him up or hope for him to draft to 3.2. For a safety, Snodgrass has amazing speed - one of the best 40 times in the entire draft - and he could even move over to corner if the team decides that's the direction they want to go. Either way, Snodgrass is projected to have a great future ahead of him.

3.2 - Otis Davison - LCB - Davison simply comes to the league with very good overall skills, but how those skills translate into production beyond the college level is the big question. The team is taking no chances since they brought in a couple veteran corners to help both Davison and Jacobs adjust, but will it be enough for Davison? He has few weaknesses, and had a slighty above average combine so the team is hoping that this pick ends with a happy ending.

3.26 - Roman Collins - RDE - A solid run stopper that has the potential to move into a starting spot if he develops well. But it is doubtful that he will make that move this year. This is a project player that the team won't hurry onto the field anytime soon.

4.1 - Lorenzo Siels - RB - Looking to add some depth at running back, Siels should be able to do just that, but doubtful that he will be an affective starter.

4.23 - Sammy Lane - LT - Left tackle isn't an area the team was targeting to improve at this year, but it is definitely not a position they are completely happy with either. Lane could be the player that puts a smile on the team's faces. He has good overall skills, but lacks the endurance to be a every down player.

5.27 - Daryl Cusano - RDE - Cusano has some real talent - good run stopping and pass rushing skills, but there is a reason he was a fifth round pick. It will be a tossup if the guy makes a career for himself in the IFL.

6.1 - Gene Hammond - FB - The team wanted to get one of the top fullbacks in the draft, but other needs drove them elsewhere with each pick. Hammond was a fallback fullback, and with a solid initial rating and a good combine, Hammond may pan out.

7.2 - Chuck Clements - WR - You can never have enough receivers. Clements had a decent combine and that's about it. He wasn't a bad seventh round pick, but he could have easily slipped into the post-draft free agency pool. He may have made more money there, too.

The Beasts just may be my favorite AC team. It's a great time to watch them grow.

Thanks. I think this team has a shot at the division this year with a little luck. I brought on so many freaking mentors this offseason that I'm hoping for some of my younger players will mature quick enough to maybe skip an entire season of development. I think by midseason, the Beasts will be Beastly. At least that defense we are putting together will be pretty freaking good.
