Last season was pretty bad---I won't rehash it. Good news is that I think we're a better football team already. The Stalliones just finished up OTAs and mini-camp and I'm a little excited about the prospects. This may be the best draft class we've seen here since 2003.
1.1 (1) SLC - SE Don Gomez
As fate would have it, Grady Gomez’s younger brother Don Gomez will start at flanker, the same position “Money” played for the Stallions. He won’t have Nigel Booker throwing to him but the franchise feels good about Tom Dewitt’s development and I think Gomez and Dewitt will be on the same page by the end of preseason. I know the team wanted to go defense here but last year’s WR corps was absolutely abysmal.
2.2 (34) SLC - LDT Lamar Ordona
What they coverted in the first round (NT Ike Kendall) fell to them at 2.2! After years of trying, the Stallions finally got a NT that they can build their 3-4 defenses around. While the “big fella” gets gassed easily, he’s going to be a load to handle.
3.1 (65) SLC - SILB Ralph Grier
We all know Herzog is the man in the middle or is he? Grier gives the Stallions another run-stuffing linebacker in the middle and I’m betting he wins the starting weak inside backer spot by week 3. The addition of NT Ordona will free up these guys to hit everything that moves.
4.2 (98) SLC - SE Terrell Gowins
I’ve not seen size like his on this team since we traded Norris to the Fire some seasons ago. He reminds of a certain big physical wide receiver specimen we watch play for that ‘other’ league. Gowins dropped a lot of passes in mini-camp but he needn’t worry about that as the only other wide receiver better than him on this roster starts at flanker. He’s a lock at split-end.
5.1 (129) SLC - RDE J.R. Evans
If Evans can make the switch to LE, I think he can be a long-term fixture on this defense---he owned RT Bashir (who doesn’t?) during Oklahoma drills this minicamp. Can he put it all together in training camp?
6.2 (162) SLC - SS Quinn Lilly
I don’t know about this pick – yes we need youth at safety and Quinn indeed has some nice upside but I have a problem with a guy that’s supposed to be bringing the wood being named “Lilly”---JT says the guy is sound but is withholding his personal evaluation until after training camp. “If I run his ass over in training camp, then he’s just like every other safety in this league” [insert Tart’s smile here].
7.1 (193) SLC - RG Carlos Paradis
What’s sad is that Paradis will probably start---what’s even sadder is that he’ll better than former starting right guard Tobias ever was.
