Just as the title says, these are my ramblings. As I go around the league and see different things, think different thoughts on players and teams, I often want to put those thoughts into an article. The problem is my inability to take that thought and drag it out into a full article. I’m nots real smarter. The fan questions let me get some of that out, but I have more so here it is all slapped together.
-Daniel Noels of St. Louis was on pace to smash the single season tackles record, something I had a fan question about once. Sadly, shortly after I talked about it Noel Daniels stopped playing. The guy hasn’t been able to get onto the field the last few weeks and his chase for that record is done for. Now leading the league in tackles is rookie Clay Bradbury of Tulsa. Impressive kid for the TigerHawks.
-Are there new masters of the art of sacking? The top three leaders in the league for sacks, and the only three guys in double digit sacks, are all guys who have never reached the double digit level. Leading the league is DE Ron Hill of Anchorage with 12.5. Hill is in his 7th season and his previous best for sacks was 9.5 last year. Tied for second in sacks is Little Rock’s OLB James Barber and Iowa City’s DE Freddie Swift. It is not often that we see a LB near the top of the sacks list. It happens, just not often in this league. Barber is a 6th year guy who is having a career year, and one more sack doubles his previous high of 5.5, set in his 2nd season in the league. Freddie Swift is probably the most solid of these three in my opinion, meaning I think he will end up consistently being a leading sack master. In his fourth year he is also at a career high for himself, his previous best being 9 sacks in his second year. He did well last year but injuries shortened his season.
-When the season ends and guys get together to vote on season awards, I want one guy to get noticed who may not be. If there is once again a special teams award there is one guy who stands out to me. He doesn’t kick, he doesn’t return kicks. All this guy does is make plays though. California’s Lamont Schultz, an undrafted rookie free agent who is a backup running back, is a mad man on special teams coverage. He leads the league in special teams tackles with 32. What really stands out to me though is that he leads the league with 6 forced fumbles, all while playing nothing but special teams. You do the math, Schultz has 6 forced fumbles in 145 special teams plays. The three guys with 5 forced fumbles all play defense and have at least 400 (up to 700 for one guy) plays under their belt this season.
-You may not here much about them, but the Vancouver Killer Whales arguably have the best offensive line in the league. Second in key run blocks, tied for first for fewest sacks given up with only 15, second fewest passes blocked at the line with only 7 all year, and they are by far the leader in hurries with only 28 against their QB this year. The next best line in hurries yielded is 39.
-The Murfreesboro Mules have 14 4th down attempts this season in 13 games. What is more impressive is that they have converted 9 of them. On the other side, undefeated Norfolk has not gone for it on 4th down once this season. Another little fact, the 10 teams with the fewest 4th down attempts (all 5 or under) are serious playoff contenders.
-This breaking news just in, three weeks ago Reno running back Jacques Crosby scored a TD that made him the all-time touchdown leader for running backs. He passed the retired Orlando and Vancouver great, Allan Ho. Ho had 74 rushing touchdowns in only 6 seasons played. Crosby now sits at 75.
-More breaking news! Five weeks ago Madison CB Kenneth Jones had an interception against the Pittsburgh Power. This moved him into first place all-time in career interceptions with 34. The retired VooDoo/Phantom, Daniel Lenhart, held the record with 33. Lenhart also held the career fumble recovery record until this season. He has been passed by DT John Ash currently of Reno, and OLB Hank Tran of Wichita.
-I just noticed for the first time that the YPC record was messed up in the FOF 2004 to FOF 2007 conversion. 0.54 YPC is the single season record? Running is hard in this league!
-I don’t think Shaun Schutz should be allowed to run the football for the Cardinals any more. Go with Farrell as the #2 guy already, Schutz makes me want to schatz.
-If you want to find hot chicks, stay away from AC North cities.
