I am back with my second round of fan questions, and my not so informed answers. I continue to keep moving around the Imperial Football world, and moving fast. As usual the questions keep getting thrown at me, and here are a few of them.
Q. Do you see Noel Daniels breaking the season tackles record?
Once the weather cleared and I started moving out of the New Orleans area last week, I was thrown questions by a Voodoo fan. The Voodoo and Cardinals have a long, bitter rivalry, and Noel Daniels is currently of concern to some of them. See, the current single season record holder for tackles is the now retired Brett Bond. Bond was a great LB in Louisiana for the first 4 years of this league, and Voodoo fans still love the guy. In 2003 he set the tackles record with 151, just beating out two other players from that year, John Hines and John Maynard. Maynard came close last year once again with 149 tackles. Other then that instance, the record has not been threatened very often since 2003. Daniels is threatening it though, and as a Cardinal player it is only making it worse for Voodoo fans. Through 8 games Daniels has 87 tackles, a pace that would give him 174 for the year. He has 4 games this year with at least 13 tackles, getting up to 18 once. Daniels is tearing up the league, and not only could shatter this record but just to get under Voodoo fan’s skin even more, is a leader for Defensive Player of the Year when you throw in his 4 interceptions and 1 forced fumble.
Q. Who are your top 5 quarterbacks of all time?
I was hitchhiking across Illinois a few days back, making my way to Iowa. Well I got delayed because I was near a prison, some crap local cop thought I looked like an escaped prisoner, and they threw me in a cell for a couple of days until it was all sorted out. Note to self: Don’t wear the Albuquerque Matador track suit when traveling through Illinois, a little too much orange. So the guard in the jail recognized me, and asked me this. I gave him this list….
1. Jay Caro, Portland Seals – He may not have the number of years in the league as other guys, but I believe he has clearly shown he is the best QB this league has ever seen. And the scary part is he is still getting better it seems. He should get over 4,000 passing yards for the 4th time in his 6 years playing, could get over 30 touchdown passes for a 4th straight year, and his interceptions haven’t hit the double digit mark since his 3rd year.
2. Nigel Booker, Houston Renegades/Salt Lake City Stallions – Booker has the highest career QB Rating in league history so far, and is second in touchdown passes. He has also kept the interceptions down over his career. For QBs with over 2500 career pass attempts, only Jay Caro has thrown fewer INTs. Another big factor for me is his move from SLC to Houston. When he arrived in Houston, that team quickly became an instant contender and remains so today.
3. Harold Lozier, Norfolk Vipers – Not many quarterbacks can come close to being as clutch as the Finger. Lozier has played in, and won, more big games then any other QB in this league. His stats are very good, though nothing jumps out at you. If you want to win a game though, Lozier is capable of putting a team on his back and carrying them.
4. Gerald Sanders, West Virginia Beasts – You could say that Lozier learned by watching The Colonel, Gerald Sanders. Before Lozier hit the big time, Sanders was doing it in the same division. Already considered an old man back in 2003, Gerald played better then most QBs back then. Even at the age of 39 and 40, Sanders was being called on to help Houston and St. Louis to start. Sanders greatness in the face of Father Time earns him my respect.
5. Tobias Stanfield, Lawrence Phantoms – Big on 4th quarter comebacks, big on wins in general. There was a period when Stanfield kind of got overlooked, but I think those days are in the past. As of this article he has more passing yards and passing touchdowns then any other QB in history. The guy is simply great, one of the greatest.
6. Bonus Guys – I feel strongly towards these three guys too, and they just can’t go without mention: Leslie Steiner, Reno Wolfpack/Anchorage Lynx; Virgil Sepulveda, Vermont Mountaineers; Ralph Given, Little Rock Toads.
Q. Is Bryant Beckner the best kick returner ever or what?
This is another question from the state of Louisiana, where Beckner is a huge star. The WR was born and raised not far from Baton Rouge, and plays for the Houston Renegades since he got into the league 4 years ago. I told the kid who asked me that it is not so cut and dry, but he looks like he may be. In four years Bryant already has the record for kickoff return touchdowns with 5. Only Dakota’s WR Ryan McCellion can claim to match those 5 returns, with 3 punt returns and 2 kickoff returns for touchdowns. McCellion has never had big averages though. Part of the draw back on Beckner is he only returns kickoffs, not punts. In my eyes CB Percy Brenner of Norfolk is the big competition. Brenner returns both punts and kickoffs, and does so with high return averages, and has 4 TDs. If Brenner was not cranking it up this year with his 18+ yards per punt return, Beckner would probably be a slam dunk for me. In fact both have turned it up a notch this year, with 3 of Beckner’s return touchdowns coming this season.
That is all for now, but you can count on me being back with more. I have a crap load of traveling to do the next few days, as I try to make it to Anchorage so BuddaKing can eat crow. Of course there are so many IFL cities and fans along the way, so hopefully it doesn't take up too much time and I am able to get out another article before the next games are played.
Adios Muchachos.
