It's that time again. Of course if you're reading my column then there's a damn good chance that you already knew that.
The time of course is Newark Week! A time of tension and determination... Of primal emotions... Of sweat and blood... And eventually for one team: Glory!
The Bulldogs limp into this game at 1-6 but the Phantoms know that this isn't your average 1-6 team. "Hey, this is Newark," surmised Head Coach Hunter Crawford. "This is our arch-rival. We have two goals every season: to beat Newark and win the Championship. They have two goals every season: to beat us and win the Championship. The odds are they aren't winning the Championship this year so this is the biggest game of the season for them. Add to that the fact that this could be the game we finally balance the series after 7 seasons of being behind. Add to that the fact that they're a talented team regardless of record. Our players will have no problem getting up for this game!"
The Phantoms are riding high nowadays but a loss to Newark would make a 15-1 season an average season in the minds of Phantom Phans so we're praying that the team doesn't fall into the quintessential trap game.
I asked defensive leader R.J. Kley what he thought about playing a Bulldog team without his nemesis Alan Crespo. "Crespo is the best back in the history of this league," he replied. "But the B-dogs are not the one man team people think they are. I don't look at it as kicking Newark when they're down. I just look at it as kicking Newark... and I haven't played a full game in weeks!"
Let's hope the rest of the team feels the same way and we can tie this f'n thing!!
All-time wins in the series
Newark: 8
Lawrence: 7
