  • Here we go again (Lawrence v. Newark XVI)...

    by Spark Wonup
    Lawrence Sun Times

It's that time again. Of course if you're reading my column then there's a damn good chance that you already knew that.

The time of course is Newark Week! A time of tension and determination... Of primal emotions... Of sweat and blood... And eventually for one team: Glory!

The Bulldogs limp into this game at 1-6 but the Phantoms know that this isn't your average 1-6 team. "Hey, this is Newark," surmised Head Coach Hunter Crawford. "This is our arch-rival. We have two goals every season: to beat Newark and win the Championship. They have two goals every season: to beat us and win the Championship. The odds are they aren't winning the Championship this year so this is the biggest game of the season for them. Add to that the fact that this could be the game we finally balance the series after 7 seasons of being behind. Add to that the fact that they're a talented team regardless of record. Our players will have no problem getting up for this game!"

The Phantoms are riding high nowadays but a loss to Newark would make a 15-1 season an average season in the minds of Phantom Phans so we're praying that the team doesn't fall into the quintessential trap game.

I asked defensive leader R.J. Kley what he thought about playing a Bulldog team without his nemesis Alan Crespo. "Crespo is the best back in the history of this league," he replied. "But the B-dogs are not the one man team people think they are. I don't look at it as kicking Newark when they're down. I just look at it as kicking Newark... and I haven't played a full game in weeks!"

Let's hope the rest of the team feels the same way and we can tie this f'n thing!!

    All-time wins in the series
    Newark: 8
    Lawrence: 7

Phantom Phans. Sounds like some marketing guru has been working overtime, I like it. Now, about your signature. 14 game win streak with you as GM? YOu can lose that part, because you know i would have won that game even if you had been in control.
My banner is bigger and prettier and cooler then yours. I choose not to show it so your feelings do not get hurt.

Oh please, please, please let us meet in the playoffs... :jedi:

btw - "Phantoms Phans" has been around since 2003. Anything I notice should start with an "f" starts with a "ph" in Phantom World.

If the IFL had video you'd see Phantom Phans waiving the Phantom Phinger hand puppets all through Broke as Fuck Field during home games. The Phantom Phinger is like the giant #1 fingers but slightly different.

No need to defend the PH thing, i said i like it. As for the playoffs, we shall see. I all comes down to if I choke in the first round again or not.

Alas Broke as Fuck Field was named slightly before "the PH thang". Media and Phans alike will sometimes use the Broke as Phuck Phield spelling and, though technically wrong, is not frowned upon.

Spark Wonup with the post-game commentary:

                      Well, the series is tied!

It took 60 minutes of hard nosed football but in the end the Phantoms had just enough to edge out their arch-rivals 34-29. Lawrence gained control early getting up 14-0 and going into the half leading 21-10, normally a very safe position. But today those 10 points for the opponent were merely the first two scores in a six possession scoring streak lasting well into the 4th quarter!

Dwight "King" Burger showed the kind of poise and leadership in the face of such a disastrous season that Phantom Phans should be fearing by now in the once "run only" Bulldogs. So impressive was Dwight's performance that he got MVP in the losing effort, a rarity in pro football. At some point in the game he got in the zone and it looked like he just wasn't going to be stopped. And he almost wasn't except for a deep 4th quarter pass into double coverage that was just barely tipped by strong safety Merle Peavy into the grasp of cornerback Brenton Palmieri and a 4th down stand in the final minute of the game.

Meanwhile for our beloved team, Tobias Stanfield struggled once again today but managed to keep from turning the ball over and that, combined with a strong performance from Harris Mahoney starting in his first game at RB, was enough to get the job done against the 'dogs.

Dana Glover continued his electrifying performance on special teams by returning a Newark kick-off 95 yards for the score giving him 679 kick return yards and 2 kick return TD's on the season.

So the first half of the schedule is up and the Phantoms, though stumbling at times, have maintained exactly the same pace as their 14-2 record last season. Little Rock is clearly the main competition for home field advantage in the playoffs and unfortunately owns the head-to-head tie-breaker over us.

In other NFC East news: Sadly the Phantom's current competition for the NFC East crown, the Vermont Mountaineers, lost their leader QB Virgil Sepulveda for at least another 4 games and rookie phenom Andy Crawford blew out his knee and will miss the rest of the season. Andy would've certainly been in contention for OROY at season's end had he stayed healthy.
