The IFL's inaugural draft has been completed and the Lawrence Phantoms are very pleased with the crop of players we've selected. Whether or not these players will form a competitive team remains to be seen but we believe the talent is there and have great expectations!
Some positions were quite stocked while others were limited in the league's draft pool and we feel we've managed to draft close to a complete team out of it, which is very encouraging after only a single league distribution draft. There are some holes that we'd like to fill but that's why there's trades and free agency. As of now we've got the frame-work in place and are ready to go.
We chose a player on each side of the ball with our first two picks with hopes of landing our team's offensive and defensive leaders right from the start. Below is a little insight into both selections....
1) Edmund Peacock, LDT - Edmund wasn't the highest rated defensive lineman on the board when he was selected with the #8 pick in the draft but he has the potential to lead the type of defense we're looking to install for plenty of seasons to come and that validified his selection. It was a very hard choice to make between Edmund, Gerald Sanders (QB - W.Virginia) and Derek Nelson (LDE - Oakland) and one that will be second-guessed for quite awhile in the Lawrence area however Edmund was the #1 overall player on our draft board and we were ecstatic to see him fall to us.
2) Tobias Stanfield, QB - The Phantoms' organization did not want to go QB (especially one so inexperienced) early in the draft but the quality level of quarterback in the draft pool wasn't very plentiful and so our hand was partially forced into making this selection. That being said we expect Tobias to step onto the field right away and gain the experience necessary to lead our offense into the future.
We now turn our focus to that tormentingly slow process we refer to as the pre-season and will answer any questions you may have...
