Hartford. The name created fear in the hearts and minds of their opponents. In 2003 and 2004 the team was on the road to immortality, but stumbled along the way. In 2003, a St. Louis Cardinals team that was lucky to make the playoffs handed the Grizzlies a 17-3 drubbing. The team rebounded and finished 2004 with a 10-5-1 record. In the first round of the playoffs, they avenged their prior defeat to the Cardinals. They then tamed the Beasts of West Virginia on the road. However, the Lynx of the Alaskan North tamed them 17-13 in the Conference Finals.
2005 promised great new heights, with the acquisition of Stanley Jamison and Jim Hickman, but instead the team sunk to new depths. The old coaching staff was sacked, and a new crew was brought in. New, younger players were brought in to replace older veterans. Through 2006 and 2007 the team was forged and tempered. Finally, 2008 brought about renewed hope to the Grizzlies’ Lair. But a severe leg injury put starting QB Jim Hickman on the inactive list for 10 weeks. The team fought valiantly, but was on the outside of the playoff picture for a fourth consecutive year.
In 2009, the coaching staff was overhauled, TJ Palmateer was brought in to toughen the team.. Jim Hickman recuperated, while others such as Bryce Tan and Wesley Flemming trained for one more season. The result was the 2009 Hartford Grizzlies and their Return to Glory.
