Jester Blaze, owner/GM of the Lawrence Phantoms, confused fans today by trading picks 2.17 and 3.2 of the upcoming IFL draft to St. Louis (who fans might remember from the "Marshall Coumo trade" which worked out heinously for us) a mere couple of weeks after representing the NFC in the Imperial Bowl, a time seeming better spent with a "win now" approach.
"We're just cocky enough to have a 'win every year' approach," said Blaze in a quick interview on his way to his car. "That 7-9 2003 season leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's the only losing season that we've had and if I can help it then it will be the only losing season that we ever have. There's talk of not being able to hold a team together in this age. That may or may not be true but one thing that is true is that there is enough change from year to year that if you can balance value and build a good reputation amongst your fellow GM's then you can get things done."
"This trade gives up a great deal. A 2nd a 3rd round pick this season is going to be in 'full bloom' come 2012. However I'm a sucker for that 'unlimited upside' to getting a 1st round pick and a 4th round pick is not to go unnoticed. I think too often people look to the draft for the 'now'. The draft is for the future. If you've got problems now then, hey, you've got problems."
While the national impression seems to be that Jester hits often on draft picks the attentive Phantom Phan knows that he has his share of blunders. Will the 2012 pick end up being another R.J. Kley or another Brock Matthews? It'll take us 3 damn seasons to find out and in the meantime might sabotage any chance of an Imperial Bowl title!!!
Here's to hoping that he's got a clue.
