VERMONT DRAFT SUMMARY
Primary Objective: Replenish roster with youngsters who can play
Biggest Needs Pre-draft: Starting WR, Starting ILB, Starting RB
Round 4: Increase depth
Pick 4.13 - RT Daniel Watson
Jose Scheffler is leaving as an unrestricted free agent, and I needed cheap replacements for the backup job on the right side of [ifl]Jamel Turner[/ifl]. The debate was between a guard and a tackle at this point, but immediate need went before the chance to develop a talent with the help of Turner's mentoring skills.
Round 5: Two picks to solidify the offensive line
Pick 5.7 - RG Kendrick Buchanan
Jamel Turner is a 14-year veteran and odds are that he'll retire next season. He is, however, a skillful mentor, and not to use his skills this season would be a waste. Buchanan is a raw talent, but he brings excellent overall blocking skills, though he lacks a bit in the strength department. He might never be another Turner or [ifl]Jacob Pinder[/ifl] but he'll be a decent backup if his skills pan out.
Pick 5.13 - C Terell Bryant
With [ifl]Gayle Jones[/ifl] leaving and Ronnie Singleton not looking to pan out, Vermont drafted a center in the fifth round for the second consecutive year. Center will be the weakest spot on this year's offensive line for the mountaineers and Terell could very likely compete with free agent signing [ifl]Deion Prestby[/ifl] for the starting job. His passblocking skills might be weak, but his run-blocking skills and blocking strength look very solid. He's also (already) a great long snapper.
Round 6 & 7: Spare parts, utility?
Pick 6.13 - Spencer Wilkerson
Solid kicking prospect who might actually oust long time Vermont kicker [ifl]Joshua Huff[/ifl] as part of the rebuilding process. Huff is expensive, and the cap-space is severely needed. Wilkerson brings better than average power and accuracy to the field.
Pick 7.13 - RB Ernie Mooberry
Picked primarily for his elusiveness and to a certain extent his speed, Mooberry has already made it possible to cut veteran Cary Morris. Mooberry will be third string halfback behind starter [ifl]Sammie Flannery[/ifl] and mentor [ifl]David Sonnier[/ifl]. Once again, Vermont continues a tradition of drafting a depth-players into a position where we have mentors.
