HARTFORD, CONN. - Yesterday the Hartford Grizzlies announced they have completed their long anticipated coaching moves. Only Defensive Coordinator David Henson escaped the wrath of "The Hammer."
With the team making the playoffs after starting QB Scott Nelson missing 15 games, including their playoff loss to St. Louis, due injury, the wholesale changes were a bit of a surprise. John Richert, the Grizzlies GM, explained, "We have a quality core, even with Scotty down, we should have been able to compete better than we did. We decided to look for a coach that maintained C. J.'s good attributes while improving in other areas. Coach Mills' teams have always been known for their uncanny knack for avoiding serious injury, they always play inspired ball, and he is an offensive innovator." Mr. Richert went on to say that he feels that if Coach Mills was coaching last year's team, "We could have been something. We could have been a contender."
Their most highly prized pick up was Nate Cromwell at Offensive Coordinator. He is a young coach who is known for improving his offense across the board. Plus, he relates well to the younger players. Given a few years, he should be one of the top offensive minds in the game.
A less heralded move was picking up Mickey Wright as the new lead scout. John Richert explains the move, "I was not happy with how uneven Hugh Branch's scouting reports were. We needed someone that can give accurate reports across the board. I'll be honest with you, we were really hoping Dean Faber would take the job, but he had a Double Secret Probabtion hanging over his head, so we scooped up Mr. Wright. My only problem with him is his take on player's coming out of college, but since I have control of the War Room, we decided that would not be a problem."
While these moves were a bit surprising, Griz fans can cheer them, the team's management has shown a commitment to winning. Every move was an upgrade to the position, the only grade I can give these moves is a solid A.
