  • The Tower of Power

Starting this week, I will be putting out a weekly Power Poll for the IFL and each conference complete with a little blurb about each team. This poll is going to be based in large part on how the team is performing on the field, not just straight talent. However, talent does play a part in the poll so a team such as Orlando would actually rate lower than what their achievements might merit since Hynes is out for the season.

Expect the first poll to be out later tonight or tomorrow night.

Here is the Tower of Power for last week. The new one will come out tomorrow, I spent my time performing scouting reports for the new Tower.

          AC Conference
          1) Anchorage Lynx – Undefeated, have beaten two 4-2 teams. Have dominated 3 of their 5 games.
          2) St. Louis Cardinals – Only loss to Norfolk, but no good wins outside of Houston.
          3) Hartford Grizzlies – Only one big win, but could have won at SLC, and played Anchorage tough.
          4) Norfolk Vipers – They beat St. Louis, but lost to both the Lynx and Grizzlies.
          5) Houston Renegades – Their loss to St. Louis at home is going to comeback to haunt them.
          6) Albuquerque Matadors – Their only bad loss is to Boston. The W/L of their other losses is 8-3-1.
          7) Wichita Outlaws – They have one good win against Newark, but get an F for their loss to West Virginia. All the other teams on their schedule they should have beaten.
          8) Iowa City Snipe Hunters – They are better than their 2-4 record suggests, but they are too talented to be dominated by St. Louis and beaten by Murphreesboro.
          9) Montreal Firebirds – They are doing what they should do. They are losing to the good teams, but are beating the bad teams. They probably shouldn’t stay here with their talent, but they deserve this for now.
          10) Murphreesboro Mules – Now that Opie is back, expect them to do their best impersonation of the Jeffersons.
          11) Boston Dragons – They are here based upon their talent level and their win against the Matadors. They should be ranked higher with all their defensive talent.
          12) Louisiana VooDoo – If their opponents have one win or less, bet on ‘em. Otherwise, stay away.
          13) West Virginia Beasts – The mystery of the season is how they beat Wichita. But, they also played Boston close. Norfolk got more than they bargained for, if not for a 79 yard INT return, the Beasts might have pulled the upset. Are they turning a corner?
          14) California Heros – They haven’t been blown out, but they only have one win to their credit. You don’t get points for close losses here.
          15) Portland Seals – This is a team that is not as bad as their record. Unfortunately, they have come up short against several very good teams.
          16) Cleveland Clawz – This season is going to be ugly. If they haven’t won any of their first 6, there’s no reason to see any wins their last two games.

          NC Conference
          1) Salt Lake City Stallions – They have a 4-1 record against arguably the toughest schedule in the league. Their win against Oakland on the road is going to loom large at the end of the season.
          2) Newark Bulldogs – They’ve won a couple of blowouts (we’re talking about the Bulldogs, anything more than 8 points is a blowout!). They’re win against the Pirates on the road showed a lot of grit.
          3) Tulsa Cows – They’re only loss is to the Stallions. They are the surprise of the league so far this year. If they can maintain their pace, they will be the talk of the NC after week 8.
          4) Oakland Owls – They’re two losses are to a couple of one loss teams. They’ve been impressive in some of their wins, but all their wins are against teams currently with a .500 record or below.
          5) Lawrence Phantoms – They’ve had talent for years, can they finally push through this season. No great wins, but no terrible losses either.
          6) Columbia Fire – They only have one loss, but they have no business losing to Lansing at home. Their tie against the Trojans might come back to haunt them.
          7) Vancouver Killer Whales – They don’t have any bad losses. They played Norfolk tough and handed the Stallions their first loss. They’re better than they are given credit for. They will be a factor in the playoff hunt.
          8) Pittsburgh Power – A team of contradictions, they beat Houston, but lose to Texas and Dakota?
          9) Vermont Mountaineers – They’ve lost to the two good teams they’ve played and have beaten the teams with lesser talent. Their next two games should give a better indication of whether they are in the top half or bottom half of the NC.
          10) Madison Demons – They’re in first place in the NC North, but have two big games coming up. If they win both of the next two games, they move into the NC elite.
          11) Texas Trojans – They are playing better, and have not been blown out in any of their losses. If they can survive with Chung banged up, they should be a solid team in the NC.
          12) Reno Wolfpack - Their two wins came against teams with a combined record of 2-8. With their upcoming schedule they are probably closer to the bottom than they are the top.
          13) Orlando Pirates – A three game losing streak and Hynes out for the year lands them here.
          14) Little Rock Toads – They’re better than losing 3 of their first 4 games at home, aren’t they?
          15) Lansing Ogres – They’re 1-4, but their 4 losses are by a combined 14 points. They are a team that could just be a couple of moves away from respectability.
          16) Dakota Spirit – They’ve got reason for optimism. Their next three opponents aren’t any better than they are.

          Combined Poll:
          1) Anchorage Lynx
          2) Salt Lake City Stallions NC
          3) Newark Bulldogs NC
          4) St. Louis Cardinals
          5) Hartford Grizzlies
          6) Norfolk Vipers
          7) Tulsa Cows NC
          8) Oakland Owls NC
          9) Lawrence Phantoms NC
          10) Houston Renegades
          11) Columbia Fire NC
          12) Albuquerque Matadors
          13) Wichita Outlaws
          14) Vancouver Killer Whales NC
          15) Pittsburgh Power NC
          16) Iowa City Snipe Hunters
          17) Vermont Mountaineers NC
          18) Montreal Firebirds
          19) Madison Demons NC
          20) Murphreesboro Mules
          21) Texas Trojans NC
          22) Reno Wolfpack NC
          23) Boston Dragons
          24) Louisiana Voo Doo
          25) Orlando Pirates NC
          26) Little Rock Toads NC
          27) Lansing Ogres NC
          28) West Virginia Beasts
          29) Dakota Spirit NC
          30) California Heroes

Just updating the standings each week would be awsome, the heck with the verbage. Possibly just make some random comments at the end like a sunday notes columists or something cause I agree with Jeff but I also enjoy IFL power rankings and would like to see ToP continue them.

Wow, I think that's the first time i've ever ranked out of the bottom 10 this deep in the season on any list haha.

                    Nicely done!

fuck, Heroes ranked 30th overall in this poll.

this is an entertaining column, maybe so you don't get burnt out you should just stick to writing blurbs on the top 10 teams in each poll, or just the top 10 in the combined poll. this has a lot of potential.
