Tobias Stanfield started the game 0-7 with an interception and looked just plain rediculous out on Broke As Fuck Field today before turning his performance around completely and connecting on 23 of his next 32 attempts, saving his best for last when he lofted a 35 yarder to Bernie Krause, who up until this point had been the goat of the game, to put the Phantoms on the Wolfpack 27 yard line with 34 seconds remaining in the game and in great position to win the ballgame.
Jacques Crosby performed just as you'd expect the IFL's all-time leading rusher to perform by gashing the Phantom defense for 173 yards. Rookie Phenom "The Leash" had 11 tackles however too many were on the chasing end of Crosby or another Wolf (I'm guessing that if the team is the Wolfpack then the players are Wolves, or each a "Wolf", right Wolfpack GM?
) getting yet another Wolfpack 1st down, which is not how we like them.
"I was hyped after last week. He (Crosby) really brought me back down to Earth" said a humbled Kley, who didn't realize he set a new high in tackles with 11 on the day and is well ahead of any other rookie in that catagory right now until told by a reporter. "I'm not looking to be, act, play, or set records as a rookie. I consider myself an IFL player and want what all real IFL players want: another ring. And you don't do that by giving up 1st downs."
Reno took a 14-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, capitalizing on Lawrence's in ability to do anything at all on offense, and that's all that this reporter personally remembers as it was about that time that the Vodka took over but I know the following to be true...
... Lawrence fought back to make a game of it and go into halftime down by only 3 points. They took the lead midway through the 3rd quarter and with 9:50 left in the 4th quarter with 3rd and 5 at the Reno 8 yard line the Phantoms managed to punt on the ensuing 4th down. Yes, you read correctly, go back and re-read if you want...
...The Wolfpack methodically worked their next possession down the field to the Phantom 3 yard line where their TD hopes ended but 3 points were added to the scoreboard nonetheless and all of the sudden Reno led 23-21 with only 1:40 left in the game.
After an average kick return, a sack, and an incompletion, the Phantoms offense was staring 3rd and 18 at their own 20 dead in the face. Tobias Stanfield showed veteran poise as he hit Manuel Sherlock for exactly 18 yards, followed two plays later by the play of the day, a 35 yarder to Bernie Krause to put the Phantoms in position to win the game. Newly appointed Phantoms starter Harris Mahoney then powered the offense 12 yards closer as Lawrence used its last timeout with :09 remaining in the game and rookie kicker Tyrone Stickney looking to chip in a 32 yard figgie to win it 24-23.
"I took one out of Virgil's book at the end there", said a satisfied Tobias Stanfield after the game, referring to NFC East division-mate Virgil Sepulveda of the Vermont Mountaineers, who's known for his game-ending drives.
Our beloved Phantoms are now 3-1 and trail the 1st place Pirates by a mere tie-breaker, which is almost certainly to be nullified come week 11.
