In the hottest game this reporter has ever witnessed (96 degrees), the Orlando Pirates showed our North Eastern Phantoms what football in the sun down South is all about and took a 6-5 all-time lead in the divisional rivalry. The Phantoms talent allowed us to jump to a quick 14-7 lead but about midway through the 2nd quarter the Pirates superior conditioning started to show itself and before long the Phantoms offensive linemen could barely hold a block and our defense was being thrown around on what seemed like every other play, including a 50 yard TD run by the aging-like-wine Allan Ho who seemed to simply step aside or brush aside Phantom defenders at ease on the play.
An irate Head Coach Hunter Crawford had this to say after the game:
"In a game that we feel we should've won the other team came out and punched us in the fuckin' mouth! It's a 16 game season and this had better be a wake up call for certain players. This is certainly not acceptable football around here... giving up 50 yard touchdown runs... stalling 4 or 5 drives in the opponents 35-40... dropping passes on 3rd and 2 by supposed All-Pros... offensive holding to pull us from 1st and inside their 10 to out of FG range.
Today was a nightmare game and now we start the season once again looking up at the division and continue to be the laughing stock of the league as the only team to never win on opening day. Rediculous!"
So the streak continues and Phantom Phaithful will have to wait another season to see the curse potentially lifted. But there's still 16 weeks left to this season and we've made it out of this one with no injuries so the probability of shrugging this one off and setting off a winning streak should be modestly high.
