Week 1 - Matadors start the season off with a bang

Albuquerque's road to a championship started off smoothly as the Matadors cruised to a 17-6 victory over division rival California. Kelly Wheat and new RB Casey Gaines combined for 157 yards and a touchdown and the defense, led by SLB Arlen Weise held the Heroes to 7 first downs and 128 total yards.

Albuquerque's opening drive started strong, but ultimately ended on a sour note. The Matadors drove into Hero territory, but a false start stalled the drive and K Haywood Tate missed a 50 yard FG attempt, giving the Heroes strong field position. The Heroes took advantage and drove into FG range, taking a 3-0 lead on a 40 yard field goal by K Gene Savage.

The Matador offense couldn't get it done on the next drive, punting after 5 plays when an illegal shift penalty erased a first down. P Michael Curry pinned the Heroes deep into their territory on their own 6 yard line. The Matadors then seized momentum as Hero QB Rob Richardson threw an INT to Matador all-time INT leader S Herman Almeida. After a few key runs by RB Kelly Wheat, David Humphrey found FB Felton Bartel in the endzone for a 6 yard touchdown pass. Tate's extra point gave the Matadors a 7-3 lead.

The Heroes couldn't recover from Richardson's mistake in the first half. They were held to 15 yards in the 2nd quarter. Albuquerque had no such trouble though as their next drive took them 81 yards down the field for another touchdown, this time coming from recently acquired RB Casey Gaines. Gaines broke out on the left side for a 22 yard touchdown run, pinning California into a 14-3 hole. The next Matador drive saw Haywood Tate add on 3 more points on a 22 yard FG and the Matadors led at halftime 17-3.

The 2nd half saw the Hero defense step up. The Matadors wouldn't score again. On the Matadors 2nd drive of the half, an errant throw from David Humphrey was picked off by Darren Bruner and returned to the Matador 25. The Hero offense couldn't capitalize though. Three plays later CB David Brown came on a blindside blitz and leveled Hero QB Rob Richardson. Richardson fumbled and Matador DT Robert Senter recovered.

After stopping Albuquerque two more times, the Heroes finally put more points on the board in the 4th quarter. 35 yard drive led to a 46 yard Gene Savage field goal closing the gap to 17-6 with 8 minutes to play. The Heroes never touched the ball again. The Matadors drove 51 yards on 14 plays to run out the clock, securing the victory. David Humphrey was chosen as the game's MVP.

News and Notes: Matador LT Miles Perkins left the game in the 2nd quarter with a foot injury. He's expected to miss next week's game against Columbia.....Hero TE Deangelo Alvarez left the game in the 3rd quarter with a serious knee injury. He's expected to miss at least 2 months....The last time California hosted the Matadors on opening Day in 2005, the Heroes, then the Chaos, won 13-10......Albuquerque hosts Columbia next week. Week 2 - Columbia Holds on to beat the Matadors

The Albuquerque Matadors lost their home opener to the Columbia Fire 28-23 as Julian Cartagena threw for 342 yards and 3 touchdowns. Albuquerque attempt at a late comback fizzled as K Haywood Tate missed a key FG attempt in the 4th quarter and the Matadors were unable to put the ball in the endzone as time expired.

Cartagena came out slinging as Columbia surged to a 14 point lead, scoring touchdowns on both their opening drives. Columbia's first score came when Cartagena found WR Justin Whittaker from the 5 yard line. The second was punched in by FB Richard Steib from 11 yards out.

The Matadors answered back on the next drive. A big time 38 yard kick return by WR Louis Halstead gave the Matadors a short field to work with, starting them on their own 48. Albuquerque struggled to get their ground game going though, with 2 offensive line starters still sidelines. After David Humphrey led the Matadors into Fire territory with a 10 yard completion to Scott Scharf, the Matadors stalled and K Haywood Tate added 3 points with a 48 yard field goal.

The Fire barely died down however. After punting on their 3rd drive, again Julian Cartagena led a short touchdown drive, if you can call it a drive. On the Fire's first play from the Matador 35 after a short punt, Cartagena found Mercury Buckner for the score, extending the Fire lead to 21-3 in the middle of the 2nd quarter.

Rather than fall apart, the Matadors surged back strong. On their next drive, following yet another kick return pushing them past their own 40, the Matador offense started clicking. David Humphrey completed 4 straight passes for first downs, 3 of them caught by slot WR Burton Boswell. Humphrey finished what he started as well, finding RB Kelly Wheat in the flat for a 5 yard touchdown pass. The Fire lead shrunk to 11 with under 3 minutes to go in the half.

The next Fire drive again lasted only one play. However this time the play wasn't a touchdown. Cartagena found Justin Whittaker on the sideline, but CB Andy 'Vegas' Rouleau stripped and recovered the ball, giving the Matadors another chance to score before the half. Humphrey needed only 2 plays to find Boswell for a 14 yard score. Just like that, a game that seemed out of reach was a close 21-17 at the half.

Both defense stepped up in the 2nd half, but not right away. The Fire took the ball at the half determined to make up for their mistake and drove it 69 yards for yet another touchdown, this one again to Mercury Halbert on a 2 yard reception.

Not to be outdone, the Matador offense took advantage of another 30+ yard kick return by Louis Halstead and drove 59 yards to 6 points of their own. David Humphrey found TE Roger Webster alone in the corner of the endzone for a 3 yard touchdown pass. However, K Haywood Tate missed the first extra point of his career and the Matadors only closed the gap to 6, with the Fire leading 28-23.

The Fire were shut down for the rest of the game. Cartagena only led them past midfield one more time in the game. The Fire defense on the other hand, bent, but didn't break as the Matadors tried to sieze the lead. On their first drive in the fourth quarter, the Matadors took the ball from the own 20 and drived it deep into the Fire redzone. On a 3rd and 1 from the Fire 11, a questionable decision to hand the ball of to backup RB Casey Gaines failed and the Matadors had to settle for a FG attempt. Still rattled from his extra point miss, K Haywood Tate again failed to connect, keeping the Fire lead safe at 6.

The Matadors would get the ball back at their own 26 with 2:10 left in the game. David Humphrey led them to the Fire 25, but on his final attempt was sacked by DE Ulysses Williams, leading to the clock running out before he could line up the team to spike the ball. Julian Cartagena was chosen as the game's MVP.

News and Notes: Miles Perkins is expected to miss a 2nd straight game with his injured foot. He's expected to return for Week 4 against the West Virginia Beasts....The Matadors averaged over 30 yards per return on 4 kickoff returns....David Humphrey threw for 3 or more touchdowns for the 5th time in his career. The Matadors are 2-3 in those games.....The Matadors face the Houston Renegades next week and are 2-0 lifetime against them.

      Good read.

The part about Gaines (ex-Phantom) getting stopped sucked though.
