Heat Rising in Columbia
Despite seeing their home town heroes playing in the NC championship for the last two seasons, many fans are still hungry for more. Many are hoping that 2007 is the year that the Fire take that next step and find themselves playing for the 2007 Imperial Bowl Championship.
Knowing the desire of the fans to see a championship brought to Columbia, the Fire management made it a point to focus on need positions in the offseason. Despite the fact that the Fire are returning 19 of 24 starters on both sides of the ball, Fire management felt there where several issues that needed to be addressed.
Area one: Backup QB - Even though the Fire had a great season behind backup Jared Mulcahey, the Fire noticed that there where serveral pieces of their high powered offense missing. So to address that, the Fire brought in JC's twin Gerald Sanders. Sanders brings alot of the same abilities that JC does to the offense. This addition will give the Fire extra security should JC find himself on the injuried list again this season.
Area two: O-Line - Despite the solid play of last years team. Columbia felt that the 20 sacks that where given up last season was enough of a concern to bring in T Weston Gribble from West Virginia to help protect JC and help add alittle forward motion to the teams running game.
Area three: Defensive Front Seven - Another area that saw individual highs (Hayden 11 Sacks) as well as team highs (318.6 yards Allowed). The team felt that there was a need to beef up the teams run defense. In comes DT Neil Glaser and MLB John Hines. Hines joins Imperial legend John Maynard to help build the teams best linebacking corp over the last few years.
With these changes the team looks to build on the last two years of success. Here is to hoping that the team can take the next step and bring the Imperial Championship to Columbia.
Team on the Move - In more ways then one
With the announcement of the new team colors. The team management also announced the teams new logo for when the move to Atlanta is completed.
After the decision was made to move the team to Atlanta, the teams management went into over drive to determine what the team name and logo would be. Considering the history of the city, the team decided that the Fire name would follow the team to Atlanta, and the team would take the rich history and add the phoenix icon that the city uses to symbolize its resurrection from the historical fire that destroyed the city in 1917.
